PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Paul Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Big Lad (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Paul Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Big Lad!
The judges for this bout are Shirou Masuda, Yuuki Gou and Yukihiro Shimada.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Lad throws a series of punches but Smith moves out of range.
Smith falls off balance throwing a combination
and Lad counters with a two punch combo.
Lad fails with the takedown

and Smith counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Smith looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Lad with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Lad tries to get to full guard but Smith has control of the leg.
Smith slips a nice elbow through Lad's hands, connecting with Lad's forehead.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Lad tries to roll over but Smith keeps him under control.
Lad wants to get back to full guard but Smith has mounted him!

Smith takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Smith knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Lad on the ground.

Smith looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
Lad is desperately trying to improve his position but Smith has a good base and remains in mount.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Smith goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Lad turns into him and now he's in Smith's guard.
Smith looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.

Lad wants to control from the top but Smith keeps moving.
Smith is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Lad closes the distance looking to clinch

and Smith counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Lad looks gassed!
Lad tries to roll over but Smith keeps him under control.
Smith drops an elbow to the side of Lad's head.
Smith looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Smith is controlling the pace.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Smith working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Lad misses with a takedown attempt

and Smith counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.

Smith decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.

Lad gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Smith is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Lad knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Lad tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Smith stands up and we're back to a striking position.

Smith has managed to clinch.

Smith has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Lad clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!
Paul Smith overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Smith controlling the position well here. Lad rolled but Smith kept the hooks locked in and stayed in the dominant position.

Lad is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Smith gets his way!

Lad manages to reverse the position and now he's in Smith's guard. Nice work there by Lad.
Smith wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

Smith has his feet on Lad's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.

Lad misses with a hook to the body

and Smith counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Smith not doing much here.
Smith stops Lad from getting back to his feet.
Lad has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Smith is working away from the top position though.
Lad is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Smith scores with a couple of nice shots.

Smith drops an elbow to the side of Lad's head.

Lad is looking for a sweep. Smith is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Lad trying to hold on to Smith's head to control him but Smith postures up.
Smith is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Lad!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Lad gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Smith counters by moving into the clinch.
Lad tries to pull guard but Smith holds him up against the cage and eventually Lad drops back down to his feet.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Smith has his foot on Lad's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Lad works his way back into a safe position though.

Smith is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.
Lad is trying to maintain a safe position but Smith gets an underhook and turns Lad into the cage.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Lad seems frustrated at his inability to get double underhooks.
Lad has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.

Smith pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Lad wants to clinch

and Smith counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.

Smith is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Lad is just riding it out for now. Smith eventually gives up the hold.
Smith prevents Lad from improving his position.

Smith cracks Lad with a solid left hand.
Smith postures up.
Lad is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Smith scoring with punches to the head and body.

Smith drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Smith jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Lad wants to stand up but Smith is controlling him.
Lad is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Smith is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Lad can do to turn this around?
Lad wants to sweep here but Smith controlling him for the moment.
Smith controls from within his opponent's guard.
Smith slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Smith is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Lad knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Lad tries to bench press Smith off him but Smith keeps the position.
Big Lad has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Paul Smith is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

Paul Smith showed his dominance in that final round.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Smith, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
