The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Mendes takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket. Johnson misses with a kick to the body.
Mendes fails with the takedown and Johnson counters with a left to the body. Mendes has a takedown stuffed. Johnson shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Mendes eats them both and turns towards Johnson to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo. Johnson throws a series of punches but Mendes moves out of range. Mendes on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot. This has been an exciting period of action! Sloppy strikes from Johnson. Those never looked like landing. Wow, both these guys are really going for it! Mendes gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily and Johnson counters with a crisp one two that drops Mendes! Johnson thinks about following him to the mat for a moment but instead steps back and waves Mendes to his feet! Mendes is in big trouble!

Johnson fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Mendes has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage. Mendes had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Johnson defends it easily. Johnson stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Mendes swivels though and keeps the full guard. Johnson seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Johnson would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard. Mendes is looking for a triangle but Johnson pushes his legs off easily.
Johnson pushes down on Mendes's leg and manages to get into half guard. Johnson escapes and gets back to his feet. Good leg kick by Johnson there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
Johnson stalks Mendes and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Mendes's face. Mendes staggers backwards, shaken. Johnson displaying good standup as he scores with a three punch combination. Johnson scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent. Mendes gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Johnson to score an easy takedown into full guard. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Johnson gets to his feet. Mendes looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son! This is turning into a torrid day at the office for Mendes. He's trying desperately to land a takedown but he's failing miserably and getting slapped silly on the feet to compound his misery.

Johnson throws a couple of head shots and lands with the final one - a decent hook, which struck Mendes on the side of the head. The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Johnson stuffs the takedown attempt from Mendes. Mendes gets slowly back to his feet. Johnson misses with a series of wild punches.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Mendes gets caught napping as Johnson dives in and scores a takedown.
