PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Chuck Liddell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jeff Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Chuck Liddell!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jeff Johnson!
The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Robert Twigg and Stewart Dunkirk.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A swing and a miss from Liddell.
Liddell avoids the head kick by Johnson.
Johnson throws a series of punches but Liddell moves out of range.
Liddell slips a jab and a cross from Johnson.
Liddell throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Johnson.
Liddell shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Johnson as he avoids it easily.
Johnson throws the left hand but Liddell avoids the punch easily.
Johnson thuds a left hand into Liddell's body.
Johnson misses with a straight right.
Johnson throws a lazy uppercut
and Johnson takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Johnson lands a lovely overhand right.
Liddell looks for a takedown but Johnson sprawls well.
Johnson steps into range and cracks Liddell with a monster punch that buckles his knees! Liddell flops backwards and Johnson dives into his guard looking to finish!


It looks like Chuck Liddell has been cut.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Liddell looking for a sweep. Not yet Liddell, not yet.
Johnson sitting in guard here, content to control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Liddell is striking off his back. Johnson thinks nothing of it though and passes easily into half guard.

Liddell is looking for a sweep. Johnson is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Johnson drops an elbow to the side of Liddell's head.
Johnson with a momentary lay and pray from half guard.
Liddell moves into full guard.
Johnson wants to get up but he can't break Liddell's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Liddell wants to sweep but no luck.
Johnson passes into half guard under a barage of strikes.
Liddell is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Johnson's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Johnson's back!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Liddell softening up his opponent with strikes here.
Johnson trying to control but he's just got himself in more trouble.
Liddell wants to control but Johnson manages to buck him off and is now in Liddell's guard! Nice work there by Johnson!
Liddell throws some sloppy strikes off his back.
Liddell pulls Johnson in close to prevent any damage.
Liddell manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Liddell looking to ground and pound but Johnson is blocking nicely.
Liddell throwing shots from mount but they're not landing.
Liddell thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!

Johnson wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Liddell.
Liddell throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.

Liddell goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Johnson turns into him and now he's in Liddell's guard.
Johnson works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Johnson wants to lay and pray for a moment but Liddell keeps working.

Johnson wants to work for an arm triangle but Liddell is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Liddell has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Johnson is working away from the top position though.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Liddell is looking to get back to full guard here but Johnson has managed to pass to side control instead.
Johnson prevents Liddell from getting the reversal.
Liddell tries to lock up and control but Johnson gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Liddell is looking to improve his position but Johnson isn't that keen on the idea.
Liddell slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Liddell tries to roll over but Johnson keeps him under control.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jeff Johnson dominated that round.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Johnson misses with a right hand
and Liddell counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Johnson tries to score with a leg kick but it misses it's target.
Liddell throws a series of punches but Johnson moves out of range.
Johnson bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Liddell's head backwards.
Johnson misses with a wild body shot.
Liddell tries to clinch up but Johnson circles away and keeps his distance.
Johnson misses with a looping left.
Liddell will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Liddell doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Johnson throws an off balance right hand

and Liddell counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Liddell.
Johnson can't break the clinch.
Liddell has Johnson pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Johnson manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Johnson wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Johnson tries to break the clinch but Liddell is controlling the position.
Liddell prevents Johnson from breaking the clinch.

Johnson breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Liddell slips under a jab.

Johnson swings widly with a right hand
and Liddell counters with a nice uppercut.
Liddell takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it.

Liddell drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Johnson pulls Liddell in to control the position.
Liddell passes easily into side control. Nice work.

Liddell goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Johnson rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Liddell's guard! Nice work there by Johnson!
Johnson wants to get up but he can't break Liddell's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Liddell is looking for a triangle but Johnson pushes his legs off easily.

Johnson cracks Liddell with a big right hand but Liddell just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Johnson is looking to take a break and control but Liddell is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Johnson in side control, just content to control the action for now.
Johnson wants to control but Liddell is keeping him busy.
Liddell tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Johnson wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Johnson throws an off balance right hand

and Liddell counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Liddell loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Johnson trying to control the position.

Liddell drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Johnson manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Liddell has Johnson in his guard.
Johnson wants to control from the top but Liddell keeps moving.
Liddell doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
Johnson stays in close to Liddell's body and controls the position.
Liddell is striking from the bottom but Johnson uses the opportunity to pass into half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Chuck Liddell will probably get the nod.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. And we move into the final round!



Liddell has managed to clinch.
Johnson wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Liddell has him pressed against the cage.
Johnson wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Johnson breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Chuck Liddell is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Johnson misses with an uppercut.
A nice combination there by Johnson.
Liddell throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Johnson's waist but Johnson gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Liddell off to one side.
Johnson connects with a single shot there.
Johnson lands with a nice combination. Liddell backs away looking to recover.


Liddell is rocked!
This has been an exciting period of action!
Liddell throws a combination that misses
and Johnson counters with a stiff right hand.
Oh Liddell is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Liddell looks up at the clock. Bad move! Johnson lands a right hand from hell, dropping Liddell. Johnson pounces and finishes the fight with a flurry of punches and elbows.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:42 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Jeff Johnson!
