Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, JP Pinsent! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Dule Peterson! The judges for this bout are Steve Erwin, Damien Edna and Winston Howard.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Pinsent shoots for a takedown but Peterson saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily. Peterson pushes Pinsent up against the cage in a clinch. Peterson turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control! Pinsent can't do much from the bottom here. Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Peterson tries to advance to mount but can't. Pinsent is not content to let Peterson control the position. Peterson tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Peterson has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Peterson throwing strikes but Pinsent manages to buck up and roll into a nice reversal - now he's on top in side control! Pinsent wants to control but Peterson is keeping him busy. Pinsent is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Peterson knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Peterson is trying to improve his position.
That's one minute gone in the round. You can see the frustration on Peterson's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Peterson is trying to improve his position. Peterson is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Peterson is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Pinsent has just dragged him back down to the mat. Peterson tries to buck Pinsent off but Pinsent is having none of it. Pinsent wants to lay and pray for a moment but Peterson keeps working.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Peterson decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. Peterson looks gassed!
That's two minutes gone in the round. Peterson is thwarting Pinsent's attempts to control the position. Peterson stands up from half guard. Peterson closes the distance and clinches. Peterson decides to pull guard. Peterson is trying to control the position but Pinsent postures up. Peterson wants to stand up but Pinsent is controlling him. Peterson keeping moving, preventing Pinsent from controlling successfully. Pinsent stands and throws Peterson's legs to the side, diving into side control. Peterson is not content to let Pinsent control the position.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Peterson tries to bench press Pinsent off him but Pinsent keeps the position. Pinsent wants to lay and pray for a moment but Peterson keeps working.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground. Pinsent doesn't succeed with the takedown and Peterson counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Pinsent! Peterson controlling the position easily from mount. Peterson really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Pinsent. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Peterson looking to control but Pinsent is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. Pinsent is looking to get to half guard. Peterson working away from the top, dropping strikes. Peterson working for a submission but Pinsent is keeping him at bay. Peterson postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Pinsent looks a forlorn figure.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Peterson has his opponent pinned against the cage, landing some nasty ground and pound that is really making a bit of a mess out of Pinsent's face.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Pinsent is looking to get to half guard. Peterson lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
Peterson trying to control but he's not successful this time. Pinsent is in a horrible position here. Peterson smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Peterson sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. Pinsent is squirming around, avoiding Peterson's attempts to control the action. Peterson is in the full mount, landing strikes. Peterson controlling from mount. Peterson landing strikes, looking to finish! And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Dule Peterson dominated that round. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!
Pinsent tries to clinch but Peterson moves away and Peterson decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Pinsent's guard. Peterson stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Pinsent swivels though and keeps the full guard. Pinsent working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Peterson doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Peterson manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Pinsent keeping moving, preventing Peterson from controlling successfully. Peterson is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully. Pinsent is looking for a triangle but Peterson pushes his legs off easily.
Peterson trying to control but Pinsent is working from the bottom. Peterson stands up and waves to Pinsent to follow him. Pinsent shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Peterson counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
That's one minute gone in the round. Peterson will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Pinsent up against the cage. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Peterson escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Peterson shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. Peterson stands and steps away. Pinsent gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game. Pinsent shoots and misses and Peterson decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Pinsent's guard. Peterson wanted to stand there but Pinsent had control of the position. Peterson decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Pinsent, up you get! Peterson drives through with a takedown into guard. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Pinsent preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. Pinsent pushes a forearm under Peterson's chin to create some space. He's escaped his hips and pivoted quickly for an armbar! Can he extend the arm? Yes, Peterson is tapping out! Damn, that was fast!
