PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Franck Pompi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Xavier Washington (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pompi comes into the arena with French National Anthem blaring out of the sound system. Washington is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: I Can't Get Next To You. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Washington darts in and clinches Pompi up against the cage.
Pompi fails to pull guard.
Washington works on Pompi's body with a couple of short punches.
A hook to the body from Washington.
Pompi goes for a takedown attempt but Washington pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Washington blocks a head kick by Pompi.
Pompi with a lazy takedown attempt
and Washington connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Franck Pompi. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Washington buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
Washington thows a body kick. Pompi tries to catch it but that hurt him.
Pompi shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Washington escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Pompi chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Washington can pounce on him.
Pompi is breathing heavily.

Washington rushes Pompi and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Washington stalls.

Washington breaks the clinch.
Xavier Washington is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Washington drives through and clinches with Pompi against the cage.
Pompi changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Washington fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Washington lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A slow jab from Pompi misses its intended target.
Washington lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Pompi looks for a takedown but Washington sprawls well.
Washington with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
Washington scores with a punch to the head.
Washington throws a series of strikes that have Pompi backpedaling.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Washington moves into range and connects with a jab.

Pompi decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Washington trying to control but Pompi postures up.
Washington tries to roll over but Pompi keeps him under control.

Pompi is trying to work for a kimura but Washington is defending well.

Washington wants to control but Pompi is keeping busy.
Washington is controlling Pompi's position as best he can from this difficult position.
Pompi thows a big elbow that misses, also allowing Washington to regain full guard.
Pompi postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Pompi drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Pompi jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Pompi passes Washington's right leg, so he's now in half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Washington blocking the ground and pound attempt from Pompi.

Pompi is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Washington regains full guard. Nicely done.
Washington wants to stand up but Pompi is controlling him.
Pompi pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Washington is keeping the position for now.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Pompi is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Pompi has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Pompi tries to stand but Washington is controlling from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Xavier Washington dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Pompi shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Washington pinned against the cage. Washington gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Washington gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Washington wants to get back to his feet but Pompi is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Washington keeping moving, preventing Pompi from controlling successfully.

Pompi drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Washington manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Pompi has Washington in his guard.

Pompi escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Washington gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Washington got a little sloppy there for a moment and Pompi has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Washington has managed to get both his arms back between Pompi's legs - danger averted.

Pompi is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Washington wants to get up but he can't break Pompi's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Pompi keeping moving, preventing Washington from controlling successfully.

Pompi has managed to work for a loose triangle. I think Washington should be able to defend this one pretty easily though. Oh, Pompi has tightened it up now! Washington should have reacted faster there - he's in big trouble and yes, he's tapped out! This one is all over!
