PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jonathan Goldsmith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Haka Maka (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Goldsmith's entrance music is Dos Equis. A fine choice. Maka has chosen Island Music as his entrance music. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jonathan Goldsmith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 8 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Haka Maka!
The judges for this bout are , Jack Bonds and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A punch lands to the side of Goldsmith 's head but he takes it in his stride.
Goldsmith tries a head kick but it misses.
Haka Maka seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Goldsmith closes the distance and lands a one-two.
Some wild striking there from Goldsmith.
Goldsmith rushes in with a sloppy looking punch

and Maka counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Maka trying to control the position from guard on top but Goldsmith is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Goldsmith preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Goldsmith keeping moving, preventing Maka from controlling successfully.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Haka Maka was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Maka scores with a slapping inside leg kick.
Goldsmith wants to clinch up but Maka keeps it at a distance.
Maka throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Goldsmith's waist but Goldsmith gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Maka off to one side.
Goldsmith misses with a double jab

and Maka counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Goldsmith is trying to stand back up but Maka is controlling him
Maka seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Goldsmith does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Maka is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Goldsmith has managed to free his arm - good work.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Maka tries to pass the half guard into mount. Goldsmith knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Goldsmith is looking to control Maka's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Goldsmith avoid being mounted?
Goldsmith tries to kick Maka off but Maka keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Maka wants to pass to mount but Goldsmith is defending the position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Maka trying to control the action but Goldsmith is working from the bottom.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Goldsmith throws a right hand that misses
and Maka counters with a one-two to the body.
Maka misses with a takedown attempt - Goldsmith sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Maka looks to land a combination. Goldsmith sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
Maka tries to bum rush Goldsmith with a series of wild strikes but Goldsmith uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Goldsmith wants to clinch.

Maka looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Maka is looking to take a break and control but Goldsmith is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Maka might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Goldsmith kaven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Maka scoring with strikes to the body and head.
Maka not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Maka wants to free his trapped foot but Goldsmith is holding on for dear life with his legs.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Goldsmith kicks off Maka and gets to his feet.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Haka Maka dominated that round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!


Goldsmith takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.
Maka shoots in looking for a takedown. Goldsmith tries to sprawl out of it but Maka keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Goldsmith manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Maka moves out of range of the strikes.
Maka looks to land a combination but Goldsmith avoids it well.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Maka misses with a double jab.
Goldsmith with a lazy takedown attempt
and Maka counters with an outside leg kick.

Maka drives through with a takedown into Goldsmith's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Maka wants to control from the top but Goldsmith keeps moving.
Maka looking to sit in guard and control but Goldsmith gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Maka wants to stand and escape but Goldsmith is having none of it.
Maka is striking but Goldsmith is not phased and passes to half guard.
Goldsmith is trying to control. Maka wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Goldsmith is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Maka kicks Goldsmith off and gets back to his feet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
A good leg kick by Maka.
Goldsmith shoots in for a takedown but Maka shows good takedown defense.

Goldsmith gets tackled into the cage by Maka. Maka maintains the clinch.
Maka wants a takedown but no success here.
Goldsmith tries a knee to the head but he's missed.
Goldsmith tries to work over Maka's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target.
Goldsmith has Maka pressed against the cage, preventing Maka from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Maka is trying to break free.
Goldsmith is working Maka over against the cage.
Maka is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
Maka goes for a takedown in the clinch but Goldsmith prevents it.
Jonathan Goldsmith has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Haka Maka.
Goldsmith lands an uppercut.
Goldsmith swings wildly with an uppercut but Maka uses good head movement to avoid it.
Goldsmith jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Maka walks away with a smile on his face. Goldsmith gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Maka fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Goldsmith to the ground. Maka is now in Goldsmith's guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Goldsmith tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Goldsmith pulls Maka in to control the position.
Goldsmith is trying to keep Maka in close.
Maka postures up and lands some nice ground and pound.
Goldsmith wants to sweep but no luck.
Goldsmith avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Maka is looking to work some ground and pound but Goldsmith has wrist control.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Maka decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Goldsmith, up you get!
No luck with that takedown attempt from Maka.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Haka Maka showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


Maka misses with a double jab
and Goldsmith counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.
Goldsmith stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Goldsmith wants it to stay on the feet.
Maka is looking to chop away at Goldsmith's legs.

Maka instigates a clinch.
Goldsmith stalling in the clinch but Maka improves position.
Goldsmith is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Maka is defending well for now.
Maka tries to circle away but Goldsmith has him pinned against the cage.
Goldsmith with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.

Maka decides to pull guard.
Goldsmith distracts Maka with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Goldsmith looking to sit in guard and control but Maka gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Goldsmith utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Maka postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Maka gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Maka stuffs the takedown attempt from Goldsmith. Goldsmith gets slowly back to his feet.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Goldsmith tries to keep at a distance but Maka has taken the fight into the clinch.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Maka manages to pull guard.
Goldsmith wants to stand but Maka is controlling his posture from full guard.

Maka throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Goldsmith missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Goldsmith stands up from Maka's guard - Goldsmith perhaps looking for a knockout.
Goldsmith fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Goldsmith throws a series of punches but Maka moves out of range.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Maka lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.

Maka manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Goldsmith on his heels. He'll look to pass Goldsmith's guard now, I'm sure.

Maka drops back looking for a leg! Goldsmith is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Goldsmith manages to kick Maka off! Maka jumps back into Goldsmith's guard.

Maka has gone for a leg lock! Goldsmith slips out almost immediately though and dives into Maka's guard.

Maka has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Goldsmith is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Maka.

And that's the end of the fight!
Haka Maka comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Maka has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
