PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between David Stack (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Remedios Verzosa (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Remedios Verzosa was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 8 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, David Stack!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Remedios Verzosa!
The judges for this bout are Kenichi Hosakawa, Yuuki Gou and Ren Mimura.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Verzosa avoids the body shot from Stack.
Stack lands with a straight right. Verzosa didn't see that one coming.
Stack misses with an uppercut. Verzosa saw that one coming.
Stack throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped

and Verzosa counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Verzosa content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Verzosa prevents Stack from standing back up.
Stack trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.

Verzosa thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Stack's head.
Verzosa is looking to take a break and control but Stack is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Verzosa missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.
Verzosa looks to land a strike but Stack avoids it nicely and regains full guard.
Stack is looking to stand up but Verzosa isn't so interested in that idea.
Verzosa slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Verzosa tries to free his leg and advance position but Stack is retaining full guard.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Verzosa controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Let's hope that Verzosa has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Remedios Verzosa wasn't active enough on the ground.
Stack jabs Verzosa to the body, keeping him at a distance.
Verzosa swings for the body but Stack moves out of range.
Verzosa scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent.

Stack looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Verzosa tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Stack was well out of range. Poor timing from Verzosa.
Stack misses with a double jab

and Verzosa counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Stack!

Verzosa perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Remedios Verzosa was stalling too much, according to the referee.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Stack misses with a hook

and Verzosa counters with a takedown into side control.

Verzosa looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Verzosa has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Verzosa trying to control the action but Stack is working from the bottom.

Verzosa throwing strikes but Stack manages to buck up and roll into a nice reversal - now he's on top in side control!

Stack decides to stand up, so the ref orders Verzosa to his feet.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Stack throws a left and a right that both miss
and Verzosa counters with a lovely straight right hand!
Stack keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Stack rushes in with a sloppy looking punch

and Verzosa counters with a nice double leg into side control. Stack won't be happy with that.

Verzosa throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.

Remedios Verzosa showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

Verzosa shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Stack sprawls well. Stack wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Verzosa gets slowly back to his feet.

and Verzosa decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Stack's guard.

Stack avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Verzosa trying to control but Stack is working from the bottom.
Verzosa pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Stack is keeping the position for now.
Verzosa wants to control from the top but Stack keeps moving.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Remedios Verzosa hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Remedios Verzosa is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Verzosa scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Stack doesn't seem bothered though.

Verzosa takes one on the chin but seems OK.

Stack gets caught napping as Verzosa dives in and scores a takedown. Stack manages to retain guard.
