Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Matthew Mara (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rogelio Rodriguez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mara's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, Rickety Cricket. Both fighters really staring eachother down here, as Rogelio Rodriguez enters the ring!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Matthew Mara!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Rogelio Rodriguez!
The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Emerson Jorge and Felipe Paraventi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mara misses with a jab to the body

and Rodriguez counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Rodriguez stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Mara swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Rodriguez with a flurry of punches that miss.

Rodriguez must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Mara lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Rodriguez!
Mara avoids the attempt from Rodriguez to control.

Mara wants to control the pace but Rodriguez is squirming around nicely.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Rodriguez wants to control but Mara is having none of it.
Rodriguez is looking to improve his position but Mara isn't that keen on the idea.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Rodriguez tries to lock up and control but Mara gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Rodriguez ducks under a wild hook from Mara.

Rodriguez closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Mara is looking for a sweep.
Mara managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Rodriguez.

and Rodriguez decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Mara's guard.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Mara is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here.

Rogelio Rodriguez showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Rodriguez looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Mara with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

A shot to the body from Mara misses

and Rodriguez counters with a single leg into guard. Mara didn't expect that.
Rodriguez is looking to work some ground and pound but Mara has wrist control.
Rodriguez looking to sit in guard and control but Mara gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Mara is looking to stand up but Rodriguez won't let him.
Rodriguez wants to sweep but no luck.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Mara throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.

Rodriguez shoots in and bounces Mara off the ropes to secure the takedown into guard.
Rodriguez throws a strike but Mara rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
