Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
10 - 7 - 0, fighting out of New York, Gaius Caesar! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Alexander Popov! The judges for this bout are Bruno Lombardi, Chad Campbell and Lou da Vinci.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Caesar avoids the head kick by Popov.
Caesar misses with a double jab
and Popov counters with a head kick. Caesar moves into the clinch. Caesar stays in close to his opponent and throws a right hand to the body. Caesar is working Popov over against the cage. Caesar can't get the takedown.
Popov escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Caesar drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard. Caesar sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Popov's guard. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Caesar is taking a breather. Popov says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. Caesar looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

That's one minute gone in the round. Caesar is looking for a kimura but Popov is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Caesar to get the leverage. Popov is looking to escape. Caesar trying to pass the guard but Popov defending well. Caesar trying to control the action but Popov is working from the bottom. Caesar is working for a submission of some sort.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Popov is refusing to be controlled, as Caesar sits in half guard. We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon. Caesar sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Popov defending well though.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Popov avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Caesar. Caesar throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage. Caesar thows a huge punch but Popov dodges it nicely.
Caesar has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Caesar frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount. Popov really wants to buck Caesar off and get back to his feet. Caesar with good strikes from the mount here! Popov is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Popov can do anything to dispel that myth. Caesar lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Caesar punching from mount but Popov doing a good job of avoiding damage. Popov holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Caesar tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.

Caesar controlling from mount. Popov is trying to get back to his feet but can't. Popov looks gassed! The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Caesar is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. Popov can't stay in a position like this for much longer.

Gaius Caesar dominated that round. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
Popov swats away the attempt to clinch by Caesar. Popov throws a sloppy head kick and Caesar counters with a takedown into side control. An elbow from Caesar crashes against the mat.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Caesar throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage. Popov is not content to let Caesar control the position. Popov is being controlled here. Caesar trying to control the position but Popov is working away. Caesar postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
That's one minute gone in the round. You can see the frustration on Popov's face as Caesar controls the position. Caesar lands an elbow. Popov avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Caesar. Caesar tries to score with some ground and pound. Popov controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage. Caesar wants to lay and pray for a moment but Popov keeps working. Gaius Caesar overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Popov is putting a lot of effort into getting back to his feet here. Popov is breathing heavily. Popov is letting Caesar control him for a moment.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Caesar lands a nice forearm strike. Caesar is trying to get an arm triangle but Popov is defending well. Popov really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Caesar. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Caesar trying to control the action but Popov is working from the bottom. Caesar in side control lands a decent elbow.

The referee takes a look at Popov to see if he's OK. Caesar creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Popov sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike. He's almost out here... but no, Caesar gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control. Caesar wants to control but Popov is keeping him busy. Caesar is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Popov is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Popov takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head. Caesar thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. Caesar is staying tight to Popov's torso, preventing him from escaping. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Caesar wants to control but Popov is keeping him busy. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Gaius Caesar dominated that second round. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!
Nice uppercut lands for Caesar. That snapped Popov's head back.
Popov throws a lazy head kick and Caesar counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Caesar. The pace really dropping off here, momentarily. Caesar lands a right uppercut that snaps the head of Popov backwards. Popov tries to circle away but Caesar has him pinned against the cage. Popov is stalling here. The referee will be looking to step in if he doesn't pick up the pace. Caesar tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Caesar shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Popov's guard. Both fighters are breathing heavily. Popov wanted to stand there but Caesar had control of the position. Caesar throws some sloppy strikes off his back.

Caesar changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Popov looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. Caesar misses with an attempted head punch from side control. Caesar stands up. Caesar tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Popov manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. Popov blocks a head kick by Caesar.
Caesar shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Popov pinned against the cage. Popov gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Gaius Caesar. That's going to take a lot out of him. Caesar wants to clinch. Caesar blocks a head kick by Popov.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Popov throws a sloppy head kick and Caesar counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. Caesar is just content to waste time from the top position. Popov takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard. Popov keeping full guard, as Caesar tries to pass. Caesar advances position into side control! Alexander Popov has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Gaius Caesar is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. Popov is not content to let Caesar control the position.
And that's the end of the fight! Gaius Caesar showed his dominance in that final round. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Caesar, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
