Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Sandro Paredes! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, James Berndt! The judges for this bout are Summer Carpenter, Damien Edna and Hugh Johnson.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Paredes instigates a clinch. Paredes is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Berndt gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt. Berndt looking to throw knees to the head but Paredes is blocking nicely.
Berndt using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Paredes has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
Berndt tries a knee to the head but he's missed.
Paredes has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Berndt avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch. Paredes takes a knee right on the jaw!
It looks like Sandro Paredes has been cut. Berndt jumps into guard, dragging Paredes to the mat.
Paredes won't allow Berndt to get back to his feet. Berndt looking for a guillotine here but Paredes defends easily.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Paredes loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Paredes missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Paredes working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. Paredes throws a strike but Berndt rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top. Paredes is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Berndt is aware though and is defending well.
That's one minute gone in the round. Paredes looking for a guillotine here but Berndt defends easily.
Paredes will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Berndt scoring with punches to the head and body. Berndt would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard. Berndt stands up from guard. Let's bang! Paredes moves into the clinch. A nice glancing elbow lands by Berndt. Berndt with the Thai clinch, lands a knee to the head. Paredes is breathing heavily. Berndt lands an elbow that stopped Paredes in his tracks for a moment. Berndt tries a knee to the head but Paredes blocks it.
Berndt lands a nice elbow from the clinch. Some stalling of biblical proportions here from Berndt. Paredes is trying to drag Berndt to the mat but Berndt just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Sandro Paredes. That's going to take a lot out of him. Berndt controlling the action here for a moment.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Berndt gets a nice trip takedown into half guard. Berndt is working for a submission of some sort.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Paredes is looking to improve his position.
Berndt wants to work for an arm triangle but Paredes is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Berndt lands strikes from half guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Berndt stands up out of the half guard. Berndt clinches. Paredes takes an elbow to the temple. Berndt drags the fight down to the ground.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Paredes accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Paredes throws and elbow that misses. Berndt uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Paredes's guard. Nice move by Berndt! Paredes is working an open guard so Berndt takes the opportunity to get back to his feet. Paredes gets tackled into the cage by Berndt. Berndt maintains the clinch. Berndt lands a damaging elbow. Berndt pulls Paredes into guard.
Paredes with a flurry of punches that miss. Berndt has managed to work for a loose triangle. I think Paredes should be able to defend this one pretty easily though. Oh, Berndt has tightened it up now! Paredes should have reacted faster there - he's in big trouble and yes, he's tapped out! This one is all over!
