Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
7 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Rusty Clapper! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Pierre La Plante! The judges for this bout are William Peck, Steve Smith and Alec Ball.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Clapper closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth. La Plante looking for a sweep but Clapper has passed into full mount! Oh no! The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Clapper lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning. Clapper landing shots from mount. La Plante has given up his back - I don’t know if this is a deliberate ploy to try and escape or if he is just struggling down there.
La Plante tries to roll but Clapper sticks to his back.
Clapper is looking to finish the fight by rear naked choke. La Plante knows exactly what he's got planned though, so he's defending well. Maybe a few strikes would soften La Plante for a finish. La Plante tries to escape the position.
La Plante is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Clapper gets his way!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. La Plante is very frustrated here, being controlled quite effectively by Clapper.
La Plante tries to escape but Clapper has the hooks in and won't let him break free.
That's one minute gone in the round. Clapper has his opponent trapped and is landing shots. Not a good position for La Plante. What can La Plante do to escape this position? He's going to have to figure it out pretty quick if he wants to stay in the fight!
La Plante has hold of Clapper's leg, trying to break free but it's let Clapper lock up a rear naked choke! This could be big trouble! La Plante is turning an unusual color here… he's out! Clapper throws him to one side and jumps onto the cage to celebrate with his fans.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:32 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Rusty Clapper! Rusty Clapper retains his lightweight title!
