PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Aaron Ely (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Carlos Baluros (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Aaron Ely!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Carlos Baluros!
The judges for this bout are Konstantin Menshow, Aleksei Zolotukhin and Viktor Lagutenko.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Baluros gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Ely counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Baluros is looking for a sweep. Ely is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Ely slows the pace down in half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Ely is looking to take a break and control but Baluros is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

Ely gets to his feet - back to striking we go!

Ely clinches up against the cage.
Ely keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Baluros's efforts to push away.
Baluros tries to land knees in the clinch but Ely avoids the damage to the body.

Ely just leaning against Baluros, taking a breather.

Baluros is trying to maintain a safe position but Ely gets an underhook and turns Baluros into the cage.

Baluros is fighting off a takedown attempt but Ely is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Baluros to the mat. Baluros regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.

Ely slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

Ely gets to his feet - Baluros follows without any prompting.
Baluros goes for a high kick. It partially lands.

and Ely counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Baluros breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Baluros gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Ely gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Ely rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Baluros moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Ely closes this distance looking for a takedown but Baluros circles away.
Ely is breathing heavily.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Ely circles away from the clinch attempt
and Ely counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Sloppy strikes from Baluros. Those never looked like landing.

Ely decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Ely is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
Ely seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Baluros for as long as he can get away with.

Ely throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Ely is pressing down on Baluros's thigh, looking to free his foot. Baluros is holding on for now.
Baluros tries to push off, looking to stand up, but Ely manages to move to mount!
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Ely wants to finish this one by submission but Baluros is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Ely.
Ely throwing sloppy strikes, which aren't doing any damage.
Baluros working to try and regain half guard.
Baluros is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Baluros is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Ely takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Baluros fails with the takedown

and Ely counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Baluros is pressing down on Ely's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Ely controls from within his opponent's guard.
Baluros keeping moving, preventing Ely from controlling successfully.
Baluros looking to control.
Ely slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Aaron Ely has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Baluros moves out of range of the body kick from Ely.
Baluros shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Ely counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Ely lands a hook that snaps the head of Baluros backwards.

Ely decides to pull guard.
Ely on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Ely tries to get out of the position.
Ely bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Baluros's guard.
Ely postures up and lands a big shot to Baluros's brow.

Ely prevents Baluros from getting back to his feet.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Aaron Ely has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Carlos Baluros.

Baluros pushes Ely away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Ely gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.
Baluros is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.

Ely's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
Ely sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Baluros's guard.

Ely comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.

and Baluros holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Aaron Ely dominated that second round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!


Baluros tries to clinch up

A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.
Baluros tries a knee to the head but he's missed.

Ely gets control of Baluros's arms and successfully pulls guard. Ely will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Ely sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Ely misses with some strikes from the bottom.
Ely trying to control but Baluros postures up.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Baluros in particular looking to stall.

Baluros stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.
Baluros tries to land a front kick but Ely steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.

Ely bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Ely tries to pull guard but Baluros holds him up against the cage and eventually Ely drops back down to his feet.

That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Aaron Ely. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Baluros fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Ely, pushing him back against the cage.

Ely is stalling here. Baluros is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Ely seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Baluros has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

Baluros decides to stand up, so the ref orders Ely to his feet.
Carlos Baluros seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Ely rushes Baluros and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.

Ely can't get the takedown.
Baluros has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Ely avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.

Ely has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Baluros regains guard immediately.
Ely has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Baluros is pulling down on Ely's head. It's preventing any offense from Ely, at least for the moment.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Ely, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
