PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Stephen Kven (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Grant Hijkil (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kven comes into the arena with The Captain Entrace blaring out of the sound system. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Stephen Kven!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Grant Hijkil!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Kven lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Hijkil circles away quickly and effectively.
Hijkil shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

so Kven counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Kven throwing strikes from guard but Hijkil blocks nicely.

Kven stands and steps away. Hijkil gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Hijkil doesn't succeed with the takedown

so Kven counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Kven tries to free his leg and advance position but Hijkil is retaining full guard.
Hijkil controls Kven momentarily but Kven frees himself.
Hijkil avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hijkil is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Kven is controlling him.

The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Hijkil looking to hit a scissor sweep but Kven is one step ahead there.
Hijkil trying to keep a closed guard but Kven is proving a slippery customer.
Kven throwing strikes but missing.
Hijkil is looking to stand up but Kven isn't so interested in that idea.

Grant Hijkil has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.

Kven looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Hijkil is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Kven working over Hijkil with some ground and pound. Hijkil looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable.
Kven throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
Kven slips a nice elbow through Hijkil's hands, connecting with Hijkil's forehead.

Hijkil tries to escape but Kven is in control.
Kven grinds an elbow into Hijkil's temple.
Kven throws a strike aimed at the side of Hijkil's head but Hijkil avoids it well.
Hijkil dodges the ground and pound from Kven.
Hijkil manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Hijkil trying to control from the bottom.
Kven seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Kven is looking to take a break and control but Hijkil is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Kven is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Hijkil has managed to free his arm - good work.
Hijkil trying to hold on to Kven's head to control him but Kven postures up.
Kven is stalling here. Hijkil is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Kven seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Hijkil has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

That's time! Kven's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Hijkil shoots for a double leg takedown but Kven sprawls well. He's pushed Hijkil's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

and Kven counters by moving into the clinch.
Hijkil tries to pull guard but Kven won't allow it.
Stephen Kven has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Grant Hijkil.

and Kven counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Kven.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kven keeps the fight in the clinch, despite Hijkil's efforts to push away.

Kven has Hijkil pressed against the cage, preventing Hijkil from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

Hijkil is trying to push Kven away but Kven has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.
Hijkil drops down looking for an ankle pick but Kven pulls his leg out and moves away.

Kven feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Hijkil is on top in guard.

Hijkil closes the distance and clinches up with Kven, looking for a takedown. Hijkil pushes Kven against the cage but Kven circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Kven forces Hijkil back against the cage and clinches.

Hijkil manages to pull guard.
Hijkil preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Hijkil keeping moving, preventing Kven from controlling successfully.
Kven knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Hijkil on the ground.

Kven looking to control the position here, rather than advance.
Kven pushing down on Hijkil's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Hijkil wants to improve his position but Kven is controlling well.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Hijkil will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Kven is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Hijkil is just riding it out for now. Kven eventually gives up the hold.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Grant Hijkil hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Kven misses with a wild combination.
Hijkil takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Kven.

Hijkil throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Kven was covering up waiting for the punch and Hijkil finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Hijkil is pushing down on Kven's leg trying to pass to half guard. Kven is fighting to maintain full guard but Hijkil has managed to sneak the leg through.

Hijkil is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Stephen Kven showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Kven has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
