The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, Daniel Franklin and Tiny Johnson.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
No luck for Shankar with that takedown attempt.
Gates looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
Gates stopping the sweep attempt from Shankar.
Gates wants to stand but Shankar has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Shankar has his foot on Gates's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Gates works his way back into a safe position though.

Gates tries to hold on but Shankar pushes him away.

Gates tries to reverse the position but Shankar maintains control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Gates is working hard here to advance position.
Gates defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Shankar.
Shankar should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Shankar is dominating on the ground here - he's now on his opponent's back, looking to sink in the hooks. Gates is in real trouble.
Shankar has the rear naked choke here! This is very bad for Gates! Can he survive? No! He's out! Shankar gets to his feet and celebrates with his cornermen. He looks absolutely delighted. In the post fight interviews he takes time to thank his parents and everyone who has believed in him from the start. How sweet.
