PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Igor Filipovich Petruhin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Malenkai Vario (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Vario is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Last Night of the Kings. Both fighters really staring eachother down here, as Malenkai Vario enters the cage!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Igor Filipovich Petruhin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Malenkai Vario!
The judges for this bout are Igor Prikhodko, Ivan Kurochkin and Fedor Mirinova.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Petruhin slips under a jab.
Vario misses with a body shot.

Petruhin gets caught flat footed, as Vario shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Vario trying to control but Petruhin is working from the bottom.
Petruhin looking to hit a scissor sweep but Vario is one step ahead there.

Vario drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Petruhin manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Vario has Petruhin in his guard.
Vario working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Petruhin.

Petruhin throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Vario works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Petruhin trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Petruhin seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Vario not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Petruhin is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Vario has managed to free his arm - good work.
Petruhin takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

Vario tries to land a sweep but no joy.

and Petruhin counters with a single leg into guard. Vario didn't expect that.

Vario wants to control but Petruhin is keeping busy.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.



Vario looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Vario scoring with strikes to the body and head.

Vario is just content to waste time from the top position. Petruhin takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.
Vario looking to sit in guard and control but Petruhin gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Vario working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Petruhin doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Petruhin manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Vario can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Petruhin controls the pace.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Igor Filipovich Petruhin.

Petruhin goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Vario has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Petruhin but great work by Vario.

Vario is actively looking for submissions here but good counter grappling here from Petruhin as he works his way to full guard.
Petruhin wants to sweep but no luck.

Vario sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Petruhin's guard.
Petruhin keeps control of the position for the meantime.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Vario wants to advance to full mount but Petruhin doesn't think that's going to happen and regains full guard instead.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Malenkai Vario hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Vario tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Petruhin counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Petruhin postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Petruhin wants to pass the guard but Vario is keeping the position.
Vario wants to sweep here but Petruhin controlling him for the moment.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Nice sprawl there from Vario as Petruhin shoots in.
Vario looks to clinch

and Petruhin counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Petruhin.

Vario is fighting off a takedown attempt but Petruhin is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Vario to the mat. Vario regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.

Vario had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Petruhin defends it easily.
Petruhin not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

and Petruhin decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Vario's guard.

Petruhin is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Vario is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Petruhin, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
