PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Yuki Sakurai (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Digger Mcgee (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mcgee has chosen kung fu fighting as his entrance music. Digger Mcgee is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Yuki Sakurai!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Digger Mcgee!
The judges for this bout are Tatsuya Matsuyama, Yukihiro Yamamoto and Hirohito Nitta.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sakurai throws a right and a left that Mcgee avoids nicely.
A head kick misses from Sakurai.

Mcgee shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Sakurai but Sakurai pushes him off and we're back to square one.

Sakurai tries to bum rush Mcgee with a series of wild strikes but Mcgee uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Sakurai doesn't manage to clinch there - Mcgee circles away.
Sakurai pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Sakurai moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.

Sakurai gets the takedown into side control.
Mcgee is not content to let Sakurai control the position.

Mcgee tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Mcgee is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Mcgee is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Sakurai's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.

Sakurai is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Mcgee defends it well.
Sakurai seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Mcgee does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Mcgee is trying to work for a kimura. He's got his hands clasped together - this could be trouble! No, Sakurai has managed to free his arm - good work.

Sakurai is trying to get back to full guard.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Mcgee takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.
Sakurai misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Sakurai misses with a series of wild punches.
Sakurai throws a nice looking combination but Mcgee bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Digger Mcgee will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Sakurai will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.
Sakurai misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Mcgee closes the distance and clinches up with Sakurai, looking for a takedown. Mcgee pushes Sakurai against the ropes but Sakurai circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Sakurai is looking to slow Mcgee down with leg kicks.
Horrible takedown by Mcgee or perhaps it was just good defense by Sakurai which made him look bad.
Sakurai fails to land with a series of punches.
Mcgee avoids the head kick by Sakurai.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sakurai misses with a jab, cross combination.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Sakurai throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Yuki Sakurai seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Mcgee will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Yuki Sakurai has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Digger Mcgee.

The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Sakurai has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Mcgee is working away from the top position though.

Sakurai is trying to get back to full guard.
Sakurai is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Mcgee's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Mcgee's back!

Sakurai is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. Mcgee is defending well though. Sakurai let's go of the attempt for now.

Sakurai has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Mcgee has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!
Sakurai is not going to allow Mcgee to sit and survive in this position.
Sakurai doesn't have the hooks in and Mcgee manages to turn into his guard.
Mcgee trying to control but Sakurai is working from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Yuki Sakurai will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Mcgee will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Sakurai falls off balance throwing a combination

and Mcgee counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Mcgee wants to control from the top but Sakurai keeps moving.

Sakurai looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Mcgee working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Sakurai's head.
Sakurai is trying to control the position but Mcgee postures up.
Sakurai is trying to hold Mcgee in close to prevent damage but Mcgee has managed to pass into half guard.
Sakurai has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Mcgee is working away from the top position though.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Mcgee looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Sakurai with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

Mcgee is tying to control. Sakurai wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.

Mcgee is working for a submission of some sort.
Mcgee is keen to just control but Sakurai is a slippery customer.
Mcgee passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Sakurai!
Mcgee is in the full mount, landing strikes.
Mcgee scores with a couple of good head shots there.
Mcgee is landing with some decent strikes but Sakurai is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.

Digger Mcgee has got the better of the ground game so far.

Sakurai wants to hold on but Mcgee pushes him away.
Sakurai is wriggling around trying to escape.
Mcgee lands a big elbow.

Mcgee with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Sakurai keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.

Mcgee is working for a guillotine from mount but Sakurai frees his head quite easily.
Mcgee prevents Sakurai from getting the reversal.

Mcgee has hold of Sakurai's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Sakurai manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Sakurai tries to hold on but Mcgee pushes him away.
Mcgee takes his opponent's back. Perhaps a chance to lock up a rear naked choke here.

Mcgee working from the back looking to end the fight with a rear naked choke. Sakurai is doing well to defend. Mcgee seems to have got his hand under the chin though and he's sunk the choke in! Sakurai is forced to tap and this one is over!
