Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Chris Gaines! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, David Schmidt! The judges for this bout are Ben Zyskovitsi, Johanna Lukiainen and Arvi Lind.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Schmidt connects with a good right hand that stumbles Gaines. Gaines circles away out of range and recomposes himself. Schmidt misses with a wild body shot. Gaines does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy. Gaines throws a hook but Schmidt avoids it easily. A decent looking cross lands there for Schmidt. Schmidt throws a body punch but Gaines moves out of range. Gaines throws a head kick that misses. Schmidt lands a nice shot that snaps Gaines's head back.

and Gaines counters with a nice low kick that buckles Schmidt's knee momentarily. Schmidt misses with a body shot.
Gaines throws a poor cross that misses
and Schmidt counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Gaines thinking. Gaines fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Schmidt is out of range. Schmidt misses with a hook. Gaines ducked under it nicely. Gaines lands with a nice body punch. Schmidt throws a two punch combo that lands nicely.
Gaines throws a body kick that sends a sickening thudding noise reverberating around the arena. Schmidt checks a leg kick nicely. Schmidt has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Gaines. David Schmidt seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Gaines throws a wild body kick that Schmidt sees coming a mile off. Schmidt looks to land a combination. Gaines sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
That's one minute gone in the round. Ouch! a nice leg kick from Gaines, right into the meat.
Gaines is looking to score with low kicks. Schmidt jabbing away but nothing is landing. Schmidt fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Gaines on the side of the head. Gaines closes the distance and clinches. Gaines avoids a wild elbow strike from Schmidt. Schmidt breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Gaines throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Schmidt sees it coming and avoids it easily. Schmidt misses with a combination
and Gaines counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena. Schmidt keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.
Schmidt looks to score with a jab to the body but Gaines is just out of range. David Schmidt is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Gaines throws a head kick that misses. Gaines takes a swing at Schmidt's ribcage but misses. Schmidt lands with a right hand. Schmidt drives through and clinches with Gaines against the cage.

Schmidt pulls Gaines in close to his closed guard and prevents Gaines from doing any damage or advancing position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Gaines thows a big elbow that misses. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Schmidt looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Gaines has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Schmidt seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Schmidt is on top in guard.
Schmidt trying to control but Gaines is working from the bottom. Schmidt passes Gaines's right leg, so he's now in half guard. Schmidt in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Gaines tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Schmidt!
