Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Santiago Martin! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 4 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Finny Gussa! The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, Alec Ball and William Peck.
 The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Martin gets a takedown into half guard. Gussa avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Martin. Martin is pressing down on Gussa's thigh, looking to free his foot. Gussa is holding on for now. Martin is working hard here to advance position. Martin is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.
Martin has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Martin not landing any meaningful shots this time. Martin missing with the ground and pound from half guard.

Gussa is defending against the submission attempts here by Martin.

 That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Martin stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.
Martin changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Gussa looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. Gussa really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Martin. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Martin is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Gussa has escaped the position, nice work there.
Martin wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Gussa, who protects the arm well.
Martin stands up and we're back to a striking position.
 That's three minutes gone in the round. Martin missing with a left hand there. Gussa was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one. Gussa closes the distance and clinches up with Martin, looking for a takedown. Gussa pushes Martin against the cage but Martin circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Martin with a poor takedown
and Gussa counters with a single leg into guard. Martin didn't expect that. Martin trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage. Martin wants to stand but Gussa is controlling the position. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Gussa makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. Martin trying to keep a closed guard but Gussa is proving a slippery customer.
Gussa stands up over Martin, holding his feet. He dives back in and lands a decent shot to the head. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Martin is on top in guard.
Martin stands up from Gussa's guard - Martin perhaps looking for a knockout.
 That's four minutes gone in the round. Martin throws a low kick but Gussa avoids it. Martin tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Gussa has his takedown stuffed
and Martin decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Gussa's guard. This has been an exciting period of action! Gussa utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Martin thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Martin stands up and waves to Gussa to follow him. Martin is looking to slow Gussa down with leg kicks. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Santiago Martin dominated that round. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
Martin ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Gussa moves away.
Martin moves into the clinch successfully.
Gussa tightens his grip and picks Martin up, before dumping him to the ground. Martin manages to land in guard. Martin bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Gussa's guard. Martin wants to stand and escape but instead Gussa has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard. Martin controls Gussa momentarily but Gussa frees himself. Martin manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Gussa manages to get himself to full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gussa is working an open guard so Martin takes the opportunity to get back to his feet. Martin throws a good cross that connects.
Martin throws a low kick but Gussa avoids it.
Martin closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Gussa to the mat! Gussa manages to get full guard.
Martin drops back looking for a leg! Gussa is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Gussa manages to kick Martin off! Martin jumps back into Gussa's guard.
 That's one minute gone in the round.
Gussa pushes Martin off and scrambles back to his feet.
Gussa is breathing heavily.
Martin manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Gussa on his heels. He'll look to pass Gussa's guard now, I'm sure.
Martin stands up from guard. Let's bang! Martin shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
and Gussa counters with a takedown into side control. Martin gets back to half guard.
 That's two minutes gone in the round. Gussa thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Martin's head. The fighters are battling for position here. Martin manages to regain full guard. Nice work. Martin manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Gussa manages to get himself to full guard.

Martin decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Gussa, up you get! Martin throws a head kick but Gussa moves out of range.

Martin gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
 That's four minutes gone in the round.
Gussa shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Gussa wants to free his trapped foot but Martin is holding on for dear life with his legs. Martin moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. Martin wants to sweep but no luck. Gussa throws a big right hand that misses. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Gussa throws a strike but Martin rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Martin stands up from guard. Let's bang! And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close second round but I would say that Santiago Martin will probably get the nod. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

and Gussa counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Gussa. Martin lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Gussa!
Gussa defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Martin. Gussa wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Martin.
Martin get's back to his feet.
 That's one minute gone in the round. Martin throws a nice inside leg kick.
Martin closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Gussa's guard. Gussa takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. Martin wants to stand but Gussa is controlling his posture from full guard. Martin stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Gussa swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Martin is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Martin drops back, looking for a kneebar! Gussa looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Gussa looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Gussa!
 That's two minutes gone in the round. Martin sneaks back into half guard. Gussa drops an elbow to the side of Martin's head. Martin makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Martin. Santiago Martin overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Martin is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Gussa has his hands clasped together but Martin extends an breaks Gussa's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Martin.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:57 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Santiago Martin! Santiago Martin retains his welterweight title!
