PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Patrick McNeal (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Chop Block (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Patrick McNeal!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Chop Block!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Block fakes a jab and scores with a low kick.

Block gets the takedown into side control.

Block is trying to get an arm triangle but McNeal is defending well.
Block is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
McNeal is not content to let Block control the position.
McNeal tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Block slows the pace down.

That's one minute gone in the round.
McNeal is looking to reverse the position.
McNeal wants to control but Block postures up.
McNeal is looking for a sweep.
McNeal is breathing heavily.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Block looking to score a takedown here. McNeal is defending well but Block drives through and ends up in McNeal's guard.
Block is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
McNeal trying to keep a closed guard but Block is proving a slippery customer.

Block is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Block wants to pass the guard but McNeal is keeping the position.

McNeal looking to control but Block passes into half guard.
Block is keen to just control but McNeal is a slippery customer.
McNeal is trying to control but Block passes into side control!
Block takes a little break here. McNeal wants to take advantage but he is being controlled well.
McNeal can't do much from the bottom here.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Block decides to stand back up.
McNeal tries to bum rush Block with a series of wild strikes but Block uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Block tries to clinch there but McNeal circles away.
McNeal misses with a takedown attempt

and Block counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Block pulls guard.

McNeal got a little sloppy there for a moment and Block has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, McNeal has managed to get both his arms back between Block's legs - danger averted.
Block is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst McNeal is controlling him.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Chop Block dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


McNeal moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination.
The fight stays on the outside here - McNeal looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
McNeal fails with the takedown

so Block counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
McNeal is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Block postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Block stands up from McNeal's guard - Block perhaps looking for a knockout.
McNeal really is a fat lump.
McNeal with a lazy takedown attempt

and Block counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Block is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Block tries to free his leg and advance position but McNeal is retaining full guard.
McNeal keeping moving, preventing Block from controlling successfully.
McNeal wants to sweep here but Block controlling him for the moment.
Block loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Block passes McNeal's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Block tries to pass to full mount but McNeal defends it.
McNeal keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount.
McNeal is trying to control but can't.
McNeal might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
McNeal is trying to stand back up but Block is controlling him

Block controlling the pace.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Patrick McNeal just wasn't active enough.

Block drives through with a takedown into guard.
McNeal is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Chop Block has got the better of the ground game so far.
Block stopping the sweep attempt from McNeal.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
McNeal controls Block momentarily but Block frees himself.
McNeal can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Block controls the pace.

The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
The fight stays on the outside here - Block looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
McNeal has a takedown stuffed.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Patrick McNeal. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Block gets in close and instigates a clinch.
McNeal fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Block gets through McNeal's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head.
McNeal tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.

Block breaks from the clinch.
Block moves in looking to clinch but McNeal pushes him off.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Chop Block showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. This is the final round!


McNeal throws a body kick the misses

and Block decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in McNeal's guard.

Block drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and McNeal dives on top into guard.
McNeal controlling from the top position.
Block is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

McNeal wants to control from the top but Block keeps moving.

We're going to have a standup here because Patrick McNeal wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
McNeal closes the distance and clinches up with Block, looking for a takedown. McNeal pushes Block against the cage but Block circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Block feints and as McNeal raises his hands in defense, Block changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Block won't allow McNeal to sweep him here.
Block wants to stand but McNeal is controlling his posture from full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
McNeal working a defensive guard but Block manages to pass into side control anyway.
Block misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Block is looking to take a break and control but McNeal is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
McNeal is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Block perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
McNeal looks like he's trying to stand up.

McNeal makes some distance and scrambles quickly back to his feet. Nice work!

McNeal gets caught napping as Block dives in and scores a takedown. McNeal manages to retain guard.
Block slips nicely into half guard, despite the strikes coming from McNeal.
Block passes the guard and advances to mount!
McNeal is trying to escape the mount.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Block trying to control but he's not successful this time.

Block jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… McNeal is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by McNeal and Block has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
McNeal sneaks back into half guard.
McNeal is pressing down on Block's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

And that's the end of the fight!
Chop Block comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Block has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
