Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Athan Stamatis! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Ronaldo Souza! The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Timothy Bukovac and .
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Souza with a poor takedown and Stamatis counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body. A big right from Stamatis misses. Stamatis chopping away at his opponent's legs.
Stamatis throws a leg kick and Souza counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Stamatis's guard now. This has been an exciting period of action! Souza drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Stamatis dives on top into guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Stamatis loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Stamatis has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Souza seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now. Stamatis stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Souza swivels though and keeps the full guard. Souza avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Stamatis sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Souza's guard. Stamatis wants to pass to mount but Souza is defending the position. Stamatis drops an elbow to the side of Souza's head.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Stamatis throws a strike but Souza avoids it easily and moves to full guard. Souza tries to land a sweep but no joy. Stamatis throws a strike but Souza rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top. Souza stands and throws Stamatis's legs to the side, diving into side control. Souza wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Stamatis, who protects the arm well. Souza swings around for an armbar but Stamatis sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Souza's guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Stamatis trying to control but Souza is working from the bottom. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Stamatis is looking to advance position but Souza has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount! Souza working from mount. He moves in close and looks like he might be going for an arm triangle... He's hopped off to the side and he's transitioned into an Anaconda choke. Stamatis turning a nasty shade of purple. He's refusing to tap but he's gone! He's out! The ref rips Souza off and cradles Stamatis's limp body as Souza celebrates with his corner.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:55 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Anaconda Choke). Ronaldo Souza!
