The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Pain fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging McCarthy to the ground. Pain is now in McCarthy's guard. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. Pain content to stall in guard here. Pain postures up and lands some nice ground and pound. There's a bit of a scramble here and now McCarthy is on top in guard.
McCarthy throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Pain works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Pain wants to stand and escape but McCarthy is having none of it. McCarthy trying to control the position from guard on top but Pain is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. McCarthy not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. Pain keeping moving, preventing McCarthy from controlling successfully. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. McCarthy scoring with punches to the head and body.

McCarthy with a poor takedown and Pain counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground. Pain is working McCarthy over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes. McCarthy looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it. McCarthy tries to land a sweep but no joy. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful. McCarthy drops back looking for a leg! Pain is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Pain manages to kick McCarthy off! McCarthy bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done! Pain keeping moving, preventing McCarthy from controlling successfully. Pain is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. McCarthy engaging in some classic timewasting tactics. Both fighters are breathing heavily. McCarthy wants to control from the top but Pain keeps moving.
That's one minute gone in the round. We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Rayn McCarthy. Pain shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away. Pain landing strikes from the mount. Pain cracks McCarthy with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
McCarthy is desperately trying to get back to half guard.
Pain is still in mount, landing shots to his trapped opponent. McCarthy can't stay in a position like this for much longer.

That's two minutes gone in the round. The referee warns McCarthy that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
McCarthy really wants to buck Pain off and get back to his feet. McCarthy tries to hold on but Pain postures up. Pain raining down hammerfists from mount. McCarthy is writhing around trying to get back to his feet. Pain controlling from mount. McCarthy working to try and regain half guard.

McCarthy is looking to improve his position but Pain isn't that keen on the idea. Rayn McCarthy has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Mark Pain is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. Pain takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
