Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Thomas Riva! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Al Simmons! The judges for this bout are Roosa Järviläinen, Marco Blurström and Arvi Lind.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Riva changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Simmons looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. Riva stands up. Riva drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard. Riva controlling from the top position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Simmons throws a couple of shots from the bottom but they don't land. Simmons looking to control.
Riva works a leg free and moves into half guard. Simmons is staying active underneath Riva, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Riva stands up and beckons Simmons to join him on the feet. Horrible takedown by Riva or perhaps it was just good defense by Simmons which made him look bad.
That's one minute gone in the round. Riva shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Simmons's guard. Simmons trying to strike off his back.
Riva tries to free his leg and advance position but Simmons is retaining full guard. Simmons looking for a sweep. Not yet Simmons, not yet. Simmons working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Riva doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Riva wants to lay and pray for a moment but Simmons keeps working.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Riva decides to stand up, so the ref orders Simmons to his feet. A shot to de liver by Riva. Beautiful body shot. Simmons throws a nice looking combination but Riva bobs and weaves to avoid any damage. Riva drives through and clinches with Simmons against the cage.
Riva pulls guard. Simmons looking to pass the guard. Riva is working for submissions here. He's thrown up his legs looking for a tringle but Simmons frees his head nicely. Oh but Riva has switched to an armbar! Simmons is tapping furiously! Lovely submission there!
