Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
15 - 7 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jason McNeil! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
10 - 7 - 0, fighting out of New York, LaVern Shirley! The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, John Kavanagh and Franklyn Lucas.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! McNeil gets a double leg takedown into Shirley's guard. McNeil looking to sit in guard and control but Shirley gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Shirley works a leg free and moves into half guard. McNeil gets full guard. Shirley engaging in some classic timewasting tactics. Shirley must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Shirley stopping the sweep attempt from McNeil. Shirley trying to control the position from guard on top but McNeil is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. McNeil controls Shirley momentarily but Shirley frees himself. It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. McNeil avoids the clinch attempt nicely.

Shirley avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Hammerfist, elbow! yells McNeil's corner. There ya go! There ya go! McNeil wants to control from the top but Shirley keeps moving. That's three minutes gone in the round. McNeil stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Shirley swivels though and keeps the full guard. McNeil trying to control but Shirley is working from the bottom.
The ref stands the fighters back up. Jason McNeil wasn't doing enough on the ground. Shirley closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard. McNeil wants to control but Shirley is keeping busy and won't allow it. McNeil is looking to improve his position.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Shirley wants to work for an arm triangle but McNeil is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Shirley prevents McNeil from improving his position. Shirley wants to free his trapped foot but McNeil is holding on for dear life with his legs. Shirley is keen to just control but McNeil is a slippery customer. Shirley missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. Jason McNeil dominated that round. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
Shirley lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but McNeil circles away quickly and effectively. Shirley looking to land some kicks to the body here.

McNeil has gone for a leg lock! Shirley slips out almost immediately though and dives into McNeil's guard. McNeil trying to control the position.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Shirley avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Shirley has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Shirley is looking to take a break and control but McNeil is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Shirley thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. McNeil tries to buck Shirley off but Shirley is having none of it. McNeil struggling a bit here. Shirley in side control, working for a kimura. He's got hold of an arm and he's torquing it... McNeil is tapping! That's the end of the fight!
