The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Monson moves to clinch but Savage breaks away and Savage counters with a nice double leg into half guard. Monson moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. Monson wants to stand up but Savage is controlling him. Savage must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Monson throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.
Savage advances to half guard. Monson has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Monson tries to get to full guard but Savage has control of the leg. Monson missing with punches from the bottom.
Savage should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete. Savage is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there. Savage looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Monson with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Savage tries to pass to full mount but Monson defends it. Monson gets back to full guard.
Savage drops back looking for a leg! Monson is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Monson manages to kick Savage off! Savage jumps back into Monson's guard. Savage pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Monson is keeping the position for now. Savage is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Savage won't allow Monson to get back to his feet. Savage wants to pass the guard but Monson is keeping the position. Monson is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Savage tries to roll over but Monson keeps him under control. Savage really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Monson. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Monson is looking to take a break and control but Savage is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Savage is trying to control but can't.
Monson has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount. Monson fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!
It looks like Randy Savage has been cut.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Savage tries to lock up and control but Monson gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. A nice elbow there by Monson.
That has opened up Randy Savage's cut even more. Savage can't escape the position.
