PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Rafael da Silva (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Lewis McLay (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). McLay has chosen "The Party Song" by Blink 182 as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Lewis McLay is staring across the cage at his opponent, tweaking his nipples.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Rafael da Silva!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Lewis McLay!
The judges for this bout are John Mangel, Damien Edna and Hugh Johnson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

da Silva moves into the clinch successfully.
A frustrated look appears on da Silva's face as he tries to break the clinch.
da Silva wants to get back to striking at distance but McLay won't allow it.
da Silva misses with a body punch.
da Silva is pressed up against the cage. McLay has hold of a leg and is looking to drag da Silva down to the mat. da Silva avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

da Silva clinches up with McLay and pushes him back against the cage.
McLay blocks an uppercut.

McLay is trying to trip da Silva. He has hold of a leg but da Silva is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. McLay persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
McLay thows a big elbow that misses.

McLay is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

McLay thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
McLay with a flurry of punches that miss.
McLay has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

McLay drops back looking for a leg! da Silva is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and da Silva manages to kick McLay off! McLay jumps back into da Silva's guard.

McLay postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

McLay passes easily into side control. Nice work.

McLay swings around for an armbar but da Silva sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into McLay's guard.
McLay is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

McLay had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. da Silva defends it easily.
McLay manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
McLay lands a nice shot to the head.

McLay throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for da Silva because McLay loaded up on that one.
McLay thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!

McLay can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as da Silva is looking to escape.
McLay throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
McLay throws some wild stikes that da Silva manages to avoid easily.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

McLay goes for an armbar but he's not got it… da Silva turns into him and now he's in McLay's guard.
da Silva has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
McLay manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. da Silva manages to get himself to full guard.
McLay wants to pass the guard but da Silva is keeping the position.

The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


da Silva fails with the takedown

and McLay counters with a nice double leg into side control. da Silva won't be happy with that.
McLay tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.
da Silva takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
McLay sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but da Silva is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
McLay connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused da Silva some visible discomfort.
da Silva stops McLay from passing to mount.

McLay looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
da Silva managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by McLay.

McLay creates some space and throws a big elbow, but da Silva sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.

McLay goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, da Silva rolls with the submission and now he's on top in McLay's guard! Nice work there by da Silva!

Lewis McLay has got the better of the ground game so far.
da Silva trying to stand up but can't free himself from McLay's guard.

McLay working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. da Silva doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. da Silva manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
da Silva wants to stand but McLay is controlling his posture from full guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
da Silva throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as McLay works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

da Silva with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.

McLay punching from the bottom - just letting da Silva know he's still in a fight.

McLay is looking for a triangle but da Silva pushes his legs off easily.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

McLay has thrown up a leg looking for a triangle. da Silva doesn't defend quickly enough and McLay has managed to lock this one up! Can da Silva escape?! NO! He's tapping out! Damn, that was a quick submission - congrats to McLay on a fantastic submission victory.
