PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Brandon Pena (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mike Savage (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pena kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genuis that is Pitbull- Gasolina. Brandon Pena has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Brandon Pena!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Mike Savage!
The judges for this bout are Joseph Jones, John Kavanagh and Franklyn Lucas.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Pena has taken the fight to the clinch.
Savage trying to stall but Pena improves his position.
Savage wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Savage wants a takedown but no success here.
Pena unloads a knee to the mid-section. Savage lets out a prehistoric sounding urrrrgh.
Pena slows down the pace here.
The crowd are getting pretty annoyed with Pena for his constant stalling in the clinch and are voicing their displeasure.
Savage lands a nice looking hook to the body, against the cage.

Pena jumps guard but Savage stands there with Pena around his waist. Pena gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Pena has hold of one of Savage's legs. Savage is fighting the takedown attempt but Pena gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.

Savage is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Pena wants to control from the top but Savage keeps moving.

Savage looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Pena lands a couple of digs.
Pena trying to control the position from guard on top but Savage is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Pena is looking to stand up but Savage won't let him.
Pena trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Pena is looking to take this fight into the clinch.

Pena drives through and clinches with Savage against the cage.
Pena connects with a knee to the head.
Pena landing knees to the body. They look like they could hurt.

Savage is fighting off a takedown attempt but Pena is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Savage to the mat. Savage regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.
Pena is breathing heavily.
Savage trying to control the position here.
Savage is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Pena dives into side control.
Savage is looking for a sweep.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Pena wants to lay and pray for a moment but Savage keeps working.

Pena decides to stand back up.

Pena moves into the clinch.
Pena is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Savage is keeping busy.

Savage has hold of one of Pena's legs. Pena is fighting the takedown attempt but Savage gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Pena is trying to control the position but Savage postures up.
Savage connects with a couple of short punches.
Pena keeping moving, preventing Savage from controlling successfully.
Pena tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Pena has his foot on Savage's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Savage works his way back into a safe position though.

Savage is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

Pena is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.
Savage misses with a takedown attempt - Pena sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Savage closes the distance but Pena moves to the side

and Pena counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Pena.

Savage prevents Pena from standing back up.
Pena trying to hold on to Savage's head to control him but Savage postures up.
Pena tries to roll over but Savage keeps him under control.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Pena slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Pena is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Pena has his feet on Savage's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.
Savage throws a lazy head kick

and Pena decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Savage's guard.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Savage lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Pena!
Pena wants to hold on but Savage pushes him away.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Pena is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Savage is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.
Savage tries to control but Pena wriggling away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Brandon Pena dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Savage gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Pena counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Pena wants the takedown. Savage is fighting it off but Pena persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Savage's guard against the cage.

Pena stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Savage swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Pena cracks Savage with a solid left hand.
Savage has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Pena has passed into side control.
Savage tries to improve position but can't.
Savage has control of an arm but Pena manages to advance to Pena's back!
Pena has his opponent trapped and is landing shots. Not a good position for Savage.

Savage has hold of Pena's leg, trying to break free but it's let Pena lock up a rear naked choke! This could be big trouble! Savage is turning an unusual color here… he's out! Pena throws him to one side and jumps onto the cage to celebrate with his fans.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:05 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Brandon Pena!
