PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Gage Ruehlen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Leon Mendez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Mendez has chosen Roy Jones Jr - And Still as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Gage Ruehlen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Leon Mendez!
The judges for this bout are Roosa Järviläinen, Anni Minnemäki and Tarja Halkonen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mendez misses with a takedown

and Ruehlen counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Ruehlen.

Ruehlen escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Ruehlen is looking to clinch but Mendez is avoiding it.
Ruehlen's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Ruehlen duly obliges.
Mendez slips a jab and a cross from Ruehlen.
Ruehlen digs a good hook to Mendez's body.
Ruehlen cracks Mendez with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage.

Ruehlen pushes Mendez up against the cage in a clinch.
Mendez jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Ruehlen walks away with a smile on his face. Mendez gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Ruehlen wants to clinch up but Mendez keeps it at a distance.
Mendez tries for a takedown but Ruehlen circles away easily

and Ruehlen counters with a shoot takedown. Mendez fights it but they end up in guard.
Gage Ruehlen has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Leon Mendez.
Mendez looking to hit a scissor sweep but Ruehlen is one step ahead there.
Ruehlen wants to control from the top but Mendez keeps moving.
Ruehlen would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Ruehlen stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Mendez swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Mendez not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Mendez has his foot on Ruehlen's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Ruehlen works his way back into a safe position though.

Mendez working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Ruehlen doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Ruehlen manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mendez wants to sweep here but Ruehlen controlling him for the moment.

Ruehlen gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Ruehlen tries to bum rush Mendez with a series of wild strikes but Mendez uses good footwork to avoid the assault.

and Ruehlen decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Mendez's guard.
Ruehlen has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Mendez looks gassed!
Ruehlen wants to control from the top but Mendez keeps moving.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Ruehlen stands and steps away. Mendez gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.

Ruehlen manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Mendez on his heels. He'll look to pass Mendez's guard now, I'm sure.
Mendez wants to sweep but no luck.
Ruehlen would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Ruehlen loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Mendez pushes Ruehlen off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.

and Ruehlen counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Ruehlen drags the fight down to the ground.
Ruehlen is looking to stand up but Mendez isn't so interested in that idea.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Ruehlen bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Mendez's guard.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Ruehlen trying to control but Mendez is working from the bottom.
Ruehlen won't allow Mendez to get back to his feet.
Ruehlen knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Mendez on the ground.

Ruehlen decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Ruehlen shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Ground and pound from Ruehlen.
Ruehlen is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!

Ruehlen landing strikes from the mount and Mendez is in trouble!

Ruehlen with shots to the head and body - Mendez looks very uncomfortable down there.
Ruehlen content just to control the position here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Ruehlen wants to control the pace but Mendez is squirming around nicely.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Gage Ruehlen dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.


Mendez misses with a leg kick

and Ruehlen counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Mendez has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Ruehlen is working away from the top position though.

Ruehlen escapes and gets back to his feet.
Ruehlen pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Mendez back to the cage. Ruehlen follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.

Ruehlen is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Mendez's half guard.

Ruehlen postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Mendez to stand up.

and Ruehlen counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Mendez's guard now.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Ruehlen controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Ruehlen is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Mendez is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Mendez is trying to keep Ruehlen in close.

Gage Ruehlen has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.

Ruehlen fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Mendez, pushing him back against the cage.
Mendez tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Nice body punch from Ruehlen - that landed with a thud.
The pace really dropping off here, momentarily.
Ruehlen gets a warning from the ref for wasting time.

Ruehlen gets through Mendez's defenses to land a nice punch to the side of the head.

The ref breaks the fighters up, due to lack of action by Gage Ruehlen.

and Ruehlen counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Ruehlen.

Ruehlen throws a strike but Mendez rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Ruehlen is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Mendez can do to turn this around?

Ruehlen looking to try and escape his hips here, looking for a submission. It looks like he's going for a triangle but Mendez is defending well. Ruehlen quickly switches to an armbar and extends the arm! Mendez has no choice but to tap, to a very quick submission! Wow, that was lightning fast! Ruehlen celebrates on the cage, with the crowd.
