PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Evan Sheilds (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Drew Down (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Down has chosen 50 Cent - I Get Money as his entrance music. Drew Down will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Evan Sheilds!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Drew Down!
The judges for this bout are Yasuomi Hirokawa, Sosuke Kotani and Hirohito Nitta.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Down fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Sheilds.
Down swings widly with a right hand

and Sheilds counters with a takedown into side control.
The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Sheilds trying to control the position but Down is working away.
Sheilds working the ground and pound from side control.
Down is trying to control Sheilds's posture but Sheilds avoids it.
Down is working to avoid the ground and pound but Sheilds connects with a decent elbow.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Down tries to improve position but can't.
Sheilds tries to score with some ground and pound. Down controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Down is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Sheilds's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Sheilds seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Down does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Sheilds is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Sheilds thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

Sheilds trying to control from half guard but Down is working away.
Down wants to control but Sheilds is keeping busy.
Down is looking to improve his position.
Sheilds takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Down is refusing to be controlled, as Sheilds sits in half guard.
Sheilds thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Down's head.
Down regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Sheilds.
Sheilds postures up.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Sheilds is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Down not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Sheilds takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.
Down throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Sheilds throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Down sees it coming and avoids it easily.
Down lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.
Sheilds staying out of range there.
Down swings for the body but Sheilds moves out of range.
Down misses with a body kick.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Down looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it.
Sheilds takes a kick to the body and keeps moving.
Down throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
Down works over Sheilds's head and body with a nice combination.
Down smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button.
Sheilds takes one to the chin there.
Sheilds gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there.
A head kick misses from Down.

Down gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Sheilds to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Sheilds wants to control from the top but Down keeps moving.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Sheilds lands a couple of digs.
Down working a defensive guard here.
Sheilds pushing down on Down's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Sheilds connects with a nice short shot to Down's temple.
Sheilds takes advantage of the dominant position to land a couple of big hammer fists.

Sheilds is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Down has managed to free his arm - good work.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Sheilds seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Down does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Evan Sheilds dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Down connects with a looping left hand that seems like it dazed Sheilds momentarily.
Down connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Sheilds's hands.
Sheilds has a takedown stuffed.
Down slaps away a takedown attempt from Sheilds, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Down looks to land a left hand but Sheilds moved out of range nicely.
Down's corner calls for a 1-2. Down obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
Down bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Sheilds's head.
Drew Down seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Down throws a wild body kick that Sheilds sees coming a mile off.
Sheilds tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Down swivels and escapes.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Evan Sheilds. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Down lands a nice shot that snaps Sheilds's head back.
Down looks to score with a jab to the body but Sheilds is just out of range.
Sheilds shoots in but no luck this time.
Down slips a jab from Sheilds.
A thudding body kick lands there by Down!
A combination from Down does no damage.

Sheilds fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Down to the ground. Sheilds is now in Down's guard.
Down controls Sheilds momentarily but Sheilds frees himself.
Sheilds won't allow Down to sweep him here.
Down has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Sheilds trying to control but Down is working from the bottom.
Evan Sheilds overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Down has his hands on Sheilds's head, controlling the position.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Drew Down wasn't active enough on the ground.
Down cracks Sheilds with a good shot that sees him stumbling back into the cage.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Nice jab there from Down.
Drew Down is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
A looping hook to the body misses from Down. Sheilds does a little dance to reset his feet.
Sheilds fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Down lands a leg kick that knocks Sheilds off balance momentarily.

Down throws a body kick that misses.
Sheilds closes the distance and clinches up with Down, looking for a takedown. Sheilds pushes Down against the cage but Down circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Down is looking to land body kicks.
Down scores with a hook to the body. Sheilds takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
A jab from Sheilds misses.
Down throws a half hearted mid kick.
Sheilds shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Down but Down pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Down jabs Sheilds right on the nose. Sheilds blinks but takes it well.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Sheilds drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Sheilds has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Sheilds trying to control the position from guard on top but Down is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Sheilds throws a big right hand that misses.
Down is trying to control the position but Sheilds postures up.
Down lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Sheilds!
Sheilds working to try and regain half guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Sheilds tries to hold on but Down pushes him away.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Drew Down showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! This is the final round!

Down throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Sheilds's head.
Down looking to land some kicks to the body here.
A swing and a miss from Down.
Down finds nothing but air with that leg kick attempt.
Down cracks Sheilds with a right hand to the side of the head.
Sheilds gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there.
Sheilds misses with a hook. Down ducked under it nicely.
Down works the jab nicely.

Sheilds shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Down as he avoids it easily.
Down throws a body punch but Sheilds moves out of range.
Sheilds tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Down swivels and escapes.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Sheilds.
Down managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Sheilds.
Down wants to control but Sheilds postures up.
Down tries to buck Sheilds off but Sheilds is having none of it.
Down is trying to control Sheilds's posture but Sheilds avoids it.
Sheilds fails to land a wild elbow strike.

Down struggling a bit here.
The ground and pound from Sheilds seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Sheilds lands a few punches from side control.
Sheilds is staying tight to Down's torso, preventing him from escaping.
Down manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

Sheilds moves into full guard.
Sheilds tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Down controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Drew Down hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Down misses with a double jab.
Down missing with a left hand there. Sheilds was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Down throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Sheilds.

Sheilds changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Down looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Sheilds is trying to move to mount but Down reverses beautifully and ends up in Sheilds's guard.
Down trying to control the position from guard on top but Sheilds is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Down pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Sheilds is keeping the position for now.
Down stopping the sweep attempt from Sheilds.
Sheilds looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Drew Down.
I think Down has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
