PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Brett Johnson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and James Anthony (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Anthony has chosen Living in a Dream as his entrance music. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Brett Johnson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, James Anthony!
The judges for this bout are , and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Johnson throws a combination that misses

and Anthony counters with a nice double leg into side control. Johnson won't be happy with that.
Anthony misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Johnson manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
Anthony looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Johnson has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Anthony is working away from the top position though.
Johnson is trying to stand back up but Anthony is controlling him
Johnson controlling the leg, holding on to half guard.
Johnson tries to get to full guard but Anthony has control of the leg.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Johnson regains full guard. Nicely done.
Johnson is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Johnson not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Brett Johnson.
Johnson shoots and misses

and Anthony counters with a nice double leg into side control. Johnson won't be happy with that.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Johnson gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Johnson is trying to maintain the position but Anthony is very close to passing his half guard.
Anthony prevents Johnson from standing back up.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
It looks like Anthony might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
Johnson gets back to full guard.
Anthony stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Johnson swivels though and keeps the full guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Johnson pushes a forearm under Anthony's chin to create some space. He's escaped his hips and pivoted quickly for an armbar! Can he extend the arm? Yes, Anthony is tapping out! Damn, that was fast!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:30 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Brett Johnson!
