The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Vera tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in the close the distance. Rutten manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Vera moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.
Vera lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Rutten circles away quickly and effectively.
Rutten shoots in but Vera avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Brandon Vera seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Vera throws a left and a right that both miss
and Rutten counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Rutten.

Horrible takedown by Rutten or perhaps it was just good defense by Vera which made him look bad.

Vera lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
Rutten has closed the distance and engaged Vera in a clinch.
Rutten turns his back and goes for a hip toss. It's a bit messy but it gets the job done and Rutten manages to end up in side control.
Rutten has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Vera!
Rutten tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Bas Rutten.
I think Rutten has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
