Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Vetaliy Kleva! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Rocky Kovalev! The judges for this bout are Aleksandr Martynov, Vladimir Khabensky and Sergei Dronov.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Kleva throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Kleva doesn't succeed with the takedown so Kovalev counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility. Kovalev won't allow Kleva to get back to his feet. Kovalev trying to control the position from guard on top but Kleva is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Rocky Kovalev wasn't active enough on the ground. Kovalev tries for a takedown but Kleva circles away easily and Kleva counters by moving into the clinch. Kleva is trying to break free. Kovalev is trying to force a seperation but Kleva has the dominant position. Kleva pushes off an throws an elbow but Kovalev leans to the side and avoids it. We're back to clinching against the cage. Kovalev lands a takedown into guard.
Kovalev trying to control but Kleva is working from the bottom. Kleva is breathing heavily. It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup. Kovalev with a flurry of punches that miss.
That's one minute gone in the round. Kovalev is stalling in the full guard.
Rocky Kovalev has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet. Kleva with a lazy takedown attempt and Kovalev counters with a nice double leg into guard. Kovalev landing with the ground and pound. Kleva keeping moving, preventing Kovalev from controlling successfully.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Kovalev is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Rocky Kovalev wasn't active enough on the ground. Kovalev gets a double leg takedown into Kleva's guard. Kovalev is looking to work some ground and pound but Kleva has wrist control. Kovalev trying to control the position from guard on top but Kleva is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
That's three minutes gone in the round.
The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Rocky Kovalev. Kovalev shoots in and bounces Kleva off the cage to secure the takedown into guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Kovalev scoring with punches to the head and body. Kovalev is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Kovalev lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard. Kovalev controls from within his opponent's guard. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Rocky Kovalev wasn't active enough on the ground. Kovalev tries to score a power double leg takedown but Kleva sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Kovalev somewhat. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Rocky Kovalev dominated that round. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.
Kovalev drives through with a takedown into Kleva's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position. Kovalev trying to control the position from guard on top but Kleva is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Rocky Kovalev wasn't active enough on the ground. Kovalev throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Kleva tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Kovalev is in Kleva's guard. Kovalev wants to control from the top but Kleva keeps moving. Rocky Kovalev has got the better of the ground game so far. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Rocky Kovalev. Kovalev moves into the clinch successfully.
Kovalev has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Kleva is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet. Kleva misses with a knee strike.
That's one minute gone in the round. Kovalev has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Kleva uses from the top position. Kovalev pushes a forearm under Kleva's chin to create some space. He's escaped his hips and pivoted quickly for an armbar! Can he extend the arm? Yes, Kleva is tapping out! Damn, that was fast!
