The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Boyd shoots in but doesn't get the takedown
enabling Manuel to counter with a crisp jab.
Boyd shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Manuel sprawls well. Manuel wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Boyd gets slowly back to his feet.

Boyd wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Manuel has him pressed against the cage.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Boyd is trying to break the clinch but Manuel is controlling him.
Manuel tries to land a knee to the body but he is off balance and Boyd avoids it.

Boyd changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Manuel fights it off and pushes away nicely.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Rice Boyd. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Manuel throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Boyd displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Manuel throws out the jab.
The fight moves into the clinch position.
Manuel lands with a short shot to the head.
Manuel digs a right hand into Boyd's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Boyd's gas tank.

Manuel has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Boyd is trying to keep an underhook but Manuel manages to get the takedown into half guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Manuel looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Boyd with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Manuel is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Boyd defends it well.
Boyd pushes Manuel off and gets back to his feet.
Manuel misses with a wild body shot.
Boyd has a takedown stuffed.
Boyd throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Manuel lands a jab to the nose.

Manuel moves into the clinch successfully.

Manuel lands a body punch - he's looking to wear down Boyd.

Oh Boyd is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Manuel has Boyd pressed up against the cage in a tight Thai clinch. Boyd is arching his back, trying to avoid the knees but a big one sneaks through from Manuel - that's hurt Boyd badly! Oh, another knee lands and Boyd is covering up! The referee steps in to save him - possibly a bit early but Boyd doesn't seem to be complaining.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:34 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Knees). Matt Manuel!
