Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
16 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Mike Martin! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
13 - 4 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jon Lyle! The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, John Kavanagh and Bruno Lombardi.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Martin lands with a straight right. Lyle didn't see that one coming. Martin ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Lyle moves away. Lyle takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket. Lyle takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness. Lyle walks into a stiff left hand from Martin. Martin lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Lyle at a distance.
Mike Martin seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Lyle throws a head kick but Martin moves out of range.
Lyle misses with a straight right. Lyle avoids the body shot from Martin.
This has been an exciting period of action! Martin misses with a series of wild punches.
Lyle fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Martin is out of range.
That's one minute gone in the round. Lyle throws a wild body kick that Martin sees coming a mile off. Martin just misses with a punch to the body.
Martin cracks Lyle with a nice right hand that draws applause from the crowd. Martin avoids the head kick by Lyle.
Lyle takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him. Lyle is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Martin looks to throw the jab but Lyle is out of range. Lyle misses with a head kick.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Martin lands a jab-cross combination. Martin scores with a hook. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Martin lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head. Martin takes a swing at Lyle's ribcage but misses. Martin throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Lyle stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly. Martin scores with a leg kick.
Lyle scores with a slapping inside leg kick. Lyle walks into a straight right hand from Martin. Lyle moves forwards but Martin connects with a nice, crisp jab.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Martin looks to score with a jab to the body but Lyle is just out of range. Some wild striking there from Martin.
Lyle slips under a jab from Martin. Martin tries to clinch up but Lyle circles away and keeps his distance. Martin comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range. Martin lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh. Lyle chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Martin can pounce on him.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Martin closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage. Martin lands a hook to the side of the head. Martin tries to work over Lyle's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target. Martin misses with a body punch.
Martin tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked. Martin working some nice short punches in the clinch. A quick uppercut on the inside from Martin. Martin lands with a left to the head. Martin lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Lyle blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning. Martin softening up his opponent with strikes, against the cage. Martin works for underhooks and lands a body shot in the process.
Lyle fails to pull guard.

Lyle looks gassed! The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Nice body punch from Martin - that landed with a thud.
Lyle tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Martin just stands there and leans against the cage. Martin lands a shot to the body. Martin throws a hook to the body. More of an arm punch but it's all scoring with the judges. Martin working on landing some head shots here - that one got through nicely. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Mike Martin dominated that round. That's time! Martin's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.
Martin cracks a nice hook into Lyle's ribs. Martin paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button. Martin blocks the body kick.
Lyle takes a nasty kick to the mid section... That should keep him thinking. Does he try and block and risk a head kick landing?
Martin fakes a head shot and lands one to the body. It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Martin here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man. Martin dips down and scores with a jab to the body. Martin scores with the left hand. Lyle knows he should have avoided that one. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Martin works the jab nicely. An inside leg kick lands from Martin. Lyle is breathing heavily.
That's one minute gone in the round. Lyle tries to check the leg kick but that clearly hurt him. Lyle's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Martin connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Lyle scrambles back to his feet. Martin is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Lyle can do to turn this around? Lyle has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Lyle there as he acknowledges the shot. Lyle takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily. Martin scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard. Martin explodes with a nice body kick and back out of range. Nice work. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Martin jabs Lyle to the body, keeping him at a distance. Martin stuns Lyle with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range. Martin scores with a nice right hand.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Martin feints and then cracks Lyle's leading leg with a nice low kick. He's obviously looking to slow Lyle down. Martin lands a left and a right that send Lyle crashing to the mat, dazed. Martin thinks about following him to the mat but decides to wave him back up to his feet!
Lyle is rocked!
It looks like Jon Lyle has been cut. Martin with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
Lyle is still on wobbly legs! Can Martin finish him? Martin finds Lyle's off switch, with a big overhand right that connects perfectly to the side of the head! Lyle flops back against the cage, eyes gazing into the distance. Martin lands an unnecessary shot before the referee has time to step in and end the fight. Brutal stuff but I'm sure Lyle will be OK.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:27 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Mike Martin! Mike Martin retains his welterweight title!
