PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Mogul Khan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ville Apila (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Apila has chosen Distance ( OF OUR SKILLS) as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Ville Apila has the better chin. Will he look to stand and bang today?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 8 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Mogul Khan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 17 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Ville Apila!
The judges for this bout are Donatello Bradman, Skip Squint and Steve Erwin.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Apila shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Khan's guard.
Khan looking to control.
Khan is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Khan tries to pass to full mount but Apila defends it.

Khan is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Khan is looking for the mount but instead finds himself back in full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Khan controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Khan trying to control the position from guard on top but Apila is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Khan seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Khan advances to half guard.
Khan stops Apila from getting back to his feet.
Apila trying to control here but he's found himself mounted! Oh no!

Apila has worked his way to half guard, taking advantage of Khan's lack of action.

Apila is looking to control Khan's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Apila avoid being mounted?

Khan tries to control but Apila wriggling away.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.

Khan goes for an armbar but Apila turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Apila.

Apila sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Khan's guard.
Well, if Apila is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Apila wants to control but Khan is keeping him busy.
Apila missing with the ground and pound from half guard.
Apila seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Khan does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Khan moves into full guard.

Khan had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Apila defends it easily.

Khan has his foot on Apila's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Apila works his way back into a safe position though.

Khan stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Apila swivels though and keeps the full guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Apila is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mogul Khan dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Khan throws a head kick that misses.
Khan shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Apila as he jumps to the side.
Mogul Khan is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Apila darts in and clinches Khan up against the cage.
Khan tries to pull guard but Apila won't allow it.
Khan fails to pull the fight into his guard.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mogul Khan. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Khan tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Apila smiles and moves away.
Apila tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Khan was well out of range. Poor timing from Apila.

Apila moves into the clinch.
Khan wants a takedown.

Apila breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Apila lands a jab to Khan's midsection.

Apila instigates a clinch.
Khan on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Good body shot from Apila.

Apila pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Apila drives through and clinches with Khan against the cage.
Some stalling of biblical proportions here from Apila.

Apila escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Apila manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Khan on his heels. He'll look to pass Khan's guard now, I'm sure.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Khan gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!

Apila looking to control.

Khan stays in close to Apila's body and controls the position.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.

Apila rushes Khan and presses him up against the cage.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Ville Apila showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!

Apila must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
