Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Woima Karhu! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Vaino St Pierre! The judges for this bout are Roosa Järviläinen, Matti Vanhoillinen and Johanna Lukiainen.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! St Pierre lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Karhu circles away quickly and effectively. St Pierre misses with an uppercut. Karhu saw that one coming. Karhu throws a leg kick but St Pierre sees it coming and checks it nicely. Karhu shoots in for a takedown but St Pierre shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. Vaino St Pierre seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. St Pierre throws a body kick that misses. Karhu shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts St Pierre as he jumps to the side. St Pierre tries a head kick but it misses.
Karhu shoots in for a double leg but St Pierre sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Woima Karhu. That's going to take a lot out of him. St Pierre misses with a head kick.
St Pierre is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Karhu. Good work by Karhu as he checks the leg kick. Karhu blocks the body kick.
That's one minute gone in the round. Karhu shoots in looking for a takedown. St Pierre tries to sprawl out of it but Karhu keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. St Pierre manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. St Pierre throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. St Pierre gets caught flat footed, as Karhu shoots in with a quick takedown into guard. Karhu postures up in St Pierre's guard and throws a big left but St Pierre blocks it. Karhu slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard. Karhu drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Karhu jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Karhu content to stall in guard here. Karhu drops back looking for a leg! St Pierre is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and St Pierre manages to kick Karhu off! Karhu jumps back into St Pierre's guard. Karhu looking to pass the guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Karhu stops St Pierre from standing up. Karhu content to stall in guard here. Karhu is pushing down on St Pierre's leg trying to pass to half guard. St Pierre is fighting to maintain full guard but Karhu has managed to sneak the leg through. Well, if Karhu is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Karhu's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground. St Pierre really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Karhu. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
The ref stands the fighters back up because Woima Karhu just wasn't active enough. St Pierre throws a leg kick that is checked and Karhu counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in St Pierre's guard now. Karhu is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Woima Karhu dominated that round. That's time! Karhu's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.
St Pierre throws a wild body kick that Karhu sees coming a mile off. Karhu has managed to clinch.
St Pierre is pressed up against the cage. Karhu has hold of a leg and is looking to drag St Pierre down to the mat. St Pierre avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance. St Pierre throws a body kick, spinning off balance and Karhu counters with a nice double leg into guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Karhu passes St Pierre's left leg - he's now in half guard. Karhu wants to pass to mount but St Pierre is defending the position. Karhu is working for a submission here. He's got hold of the far side arm and he's looking for a kimura. He's cranking on the arm and he's got it! St Pierre is tapping out! Ouch, that looked like it hurt!
