PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Thaigo Leites (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tomato Can (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Leites comes into the arena with Sunday Bloody Sunday - U2 blaring out of the sound system. Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the fighters buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Thaigo Leites!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Tomato Can!
The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Robert Twigg and Cecil Peabody.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Leites darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Can moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Leites passes Can's left leg - he's now in half guard.
Leites looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.

Leites is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Can is staying active underneath Leites, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Leites wants to work for an arm triangle but Can is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Can can do anything to dispel that myth.
Can preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.

Can has one foot on Leites's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.
Leites tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Leites scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Can pushes Leites away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Leites gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

Leites thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Can gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard.
Can really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Leites. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Can is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Leites's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Leites's back!
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here!
Can scores with punches to the body.

Can is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. Leites is defending well though. Can let's go of the attempt for now.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
A lull in the action here.
Leites tries to break free.
Can softening up his opponent with strikes here.
Leites tries to escape the position.
Leites breaks Can's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.
Can is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Leites.
Leites is breathing heavily.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Leites uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Can.
Leites shoots in for a double leg but Can sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Nice takedown defense from Can. No joy for Leites on that attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Thaigo Leites. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Leites keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Leites misses with a takedown attempt - Can sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Leites fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Leites closes the distance and clinches up with Can, looking for a takedown. Leites pushes Can against the cage but Can circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Leites misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Leites shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Can pinned against the cage. Can gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Can throws a good cross that connects.


Leites is rocked!
Leites fails with the takedown.
Leites changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Can tries to avoid it but Leites manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Can to the ground. Can escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Tomato Can is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Leites swings widly with a right hand
and Can counters with a left to the body.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Leites changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Can looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Can is trying to control Leites's posture but Leites avoids it.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Can tries to improve position but can't.
Leites prevents Can from escaping the position.
Leites tries to advance to mount but Can denies him.
Can is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Leites has just dragged him back down to the mat.

Leites is working to tighten is grip on Can's neck. He's isolated an arm and is working for an arm triangle. Can has recognised the danger and is trying to turn with the submission but Leites is really squeezing tight and eventually Can passes out! Leites breaks the hold and jumps onto the cage to celebrate! Submission of the night, I'd say!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:48 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Thaigo Leites!
Thaigo Leites is the new welterweight champion!
