Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Royce Gracie (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Aleksandr Fedorov (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
7 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Royce Gracie! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
7 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Aleksandr Fedorov! The judges for this bout are Shirou Masuda, Taro Takaoka and Kenichi Hosakawa.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gracie shoots in for a double leg but Fedorov sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Fedorov avoids a punch combination nicely.
Gracie misses with a double jab.
Fedorov feints and as Gracie raises his hands in defense, Fedorov changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup. Gracie is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Gracie keeping moving, preventing Fedorov from controlling successfully. Gracie is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Fedorov trying to control but Gracie is working from the bottom. Fedorov is fighting to break Gracie's control of his arms but Gracie is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment. Fedorov must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu. Fedorov wants to control from the top but Gracie keeps moving.
Aleksandr Fedorov has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet. Gracie throws a right and a left that Fedorov avoids nicely.
That's one minute gone in the round. Fedorov shoots in and gets a takedown into Gracie's guard. Gracie is looking for a triangle but Fedorov pushes his legs off easily.
Fedorov wants to control from the top but Gracie keeps moving. Fedorov trying to stand up but can't free himself from Gracie's guard. Fedorov is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions. Gracie looking for a guillotine here but Fedorov defends easily.
Gracie tries to land a sweep but no joy.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Fedorov is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control. We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.
OK we're going to have a standup here. Aleksandr Fedorov hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart. Fedorov shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Gracie's guard. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Gracie not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Gracie wants to sweep but no luck. Fedorov stands up from Gracie's guard - Fedorov perhaps looking for a knockout. Excellent takedown into side control there by Fedorov. Fedorov wants to control but Gracie is keeping him busy. Fedorov wants to stand but Gracie is controlling his arm.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Gracie is positioning himself to get back to half guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Fedorov wants to control but Gracie is keeping him busy. Gracie is trying to improve his position. The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Gracie can't do much from the bottom here. Gracie tries to buck Fedorov off but Fedorov is having none of it. Gracie seems a little lost for a moment, as Fedorov dominates the positioning. Gracie is not content to let Fedorov control the position.
The ref stands the fighters back up. Aleksandr Fedorov was stalling too much, according to the referee. Fedorov shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Fedorov really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Gracie. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Gracie trying to control from the bottom.
The fighters are battling for position here. Gracie manages to regain full guard. Nice work. Gracie controls Fedorov momentarily but Fedorov frees himself. Gracie trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage. Fedorov trying to control but Gracie is working from the bottom. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup. Fedorov seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Aleksandr Fedorov dominated that round. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!
Gracie lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Fedorov circles away quickly and effectively. Gracie shoots in and drives through. Fedorov sprawls well. Gracie misses with a double jab
and Fedorov counters into the clinch. Nicely done. Fedorov has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Gracie is trying to keep an underhook but Fedorov manages to get the takedown into half guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Fedorov is trying to control. Gracie wants to improve his position but can't escape this time. Fedorov stands up from half guard. Gracie shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down. Fedorov showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Gracie.
That's one minute gone in the round. Fedorov shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Gracie's guard. Fedorov decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Gracie, up you get! Gracie swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.

Fedorov fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Gracie to the ground. Fedorov is now in Gracie's guard. Gracie looking for a guillotine here but Fedorov defends easily.
Fedorov is looking to stand up but Gracie won't let him.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Gracie is trying to keep Fedorov in close.
Gracie looking for a sweep. Not yet Gracie, not yet. Fedorov is stalling in the full guard. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Gracie working for a triangle but Fedorov defends it easily.
Aleksandr Fedorov has got the better of the ground game so far. Fedorov postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Gracie is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Fedorov, into his guard. Gracie missing there with some ground and pound from the guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Fedorov working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Gracie doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Gracie manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Gracie is looking to work some ground and pound but Fedorov has wrist control. Gracie working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Fedorov's head. Fedorov is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Gracie moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. Gracie working for a triangle but Fedorov defends it easily.
Gracie lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Fedorov!
That's four minutes gone in the round. Gracie avoids the attempt from Fedorov to control. Gracie lands a big elbow. This has been an exciting period of action! Gracie looking to secure an arm triangle but Fedorov defends it well. Fedorov tries to reverse the position but Gracie maintains control. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Gracie is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Fedorov can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
A close second round but Aleksandr Fedorov will probably get the nod - 10:9. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.
A head kick misses from Gracie. A momentary lapse in concentration from Gracie enables Fedorov to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Gracie manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat. Fedorov has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Gracie is proving hard to escape from. Gracie looking to control.
Gracie is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Gracie missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. Fedorov is trying to stand back up but Gracie is controlling him
Gracie wants to work for an arm triangle but Fedorov is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Gracie throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gracie sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Fedorov defending well though. Fedorov wants to control but Gracie is keeping busy.
Gracie works his way into side control. Fedorov wants to control but Gracie postures up. The strikes coming from Gracie are missing the target in this wave of attacks. Gracie fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Gracie cracks Fedorov with a big right hand but Fedorov just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Gracie wants to lay and pray for a moment but Fedorov keeps working. Gracie throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Gracie tries to advance to mount but can't. Gracie throws an elbow but Fedorov slips to the side and avoids it well. Fedorov manages to work his way to half guard, despite Gracie's best efforts. Fedorov wants to control but Gracie is keeping busy and won't allow it. Fedorov is trying to stand back up but Gracie is controlling him
Fedorov keeping hold of Gracie's head, controlling as best he can. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Gracie working Fedorov over with strikes. Gracie in half guard on the top. He's looking for a kimura... He's got it locked and he's managed to free his trapped foot. Fedorov tries to escape but it's on too tight and he has to tap! Great BJJ skills there from Gracie!
