Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Lee Johnson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jake Shields!
The judges for this bout are , Frank Antenori and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Shields tries to clinch up
and Johnson counters with a left to the body.

Shields feints and as Johnson raises his hands in defense, Shields changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Shields tries to free his leg and advance position but Johnson is retaining full guard.
Johnson being controlled here, momentarily.
Johnson working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Shields.
Shields pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Johnson is keeping the position for now.
Johnson wants to get back to his feet but Shields is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Shields is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Shields tries to grapple but his opponent circles
and Johnson counters with a three punch combo that has Shields backing up. Shields nods at Johnson to acknowledge the strikes.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Johnson works the jab nicely.

and Johnson counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Johnson successfully pulls guard.
Shields stops Johnson from standing up.
Johnson is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Shields dives into side control.
Shields is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Johnson's shoulder. That is not cool.
Shields in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.
Shields trying to control the position but Johnson is working away.
Johnson is trying to buck Shields off.

Shields wants to lay and pray for a moment but Johnson keeps working.
Shields looks gassed!

Shields working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

Shields decides to stand back up.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Johnson lands a nice shot to the body.

Shields changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Johnson looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Johnson is trying to get back to his feet.
Johnson is trying to control Shields's posture but Shields avoids it.
Johnson is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Shields asserts his dominance and retains side control.
Johnson trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's time! Back to the action!


Shields looks to clinch
and Johnson makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.

Johnson shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Johnson showed some decent athleticism there.
Shields is looking for a sweep. Johnson is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Shields is breathing heavily.
Johnson wants to stand up but Shields has a hold of him and won't allow it.

Johnson seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Shields does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Lee Johnson.
Johnson throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Shields stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Shields doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Johnson counters with a right hand to the body.
A thudding body kick lands there by Johnson!

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Johnson rushes Shields and presses him up against the cage.
Johnson lands on the inside with an uppercut.
A frustrated look appears on Johnson's face as he tries to break the clinch.

Johnson escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Johnson fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Shields to the ground. Johnson is now in Shields's guard.
Shields striking off his back but it's not causing Johnson any problems.
Johnson is looking to stand up but Shields won't let him.

Johnson decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Nice uppercut there from Johnson.

Johnson connects with an inside leg kick.
Johnson scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Shields doesn't seem bothered though.
Johnson lands a slapping body shot.

Johnson clinches up with Shields and pushes him back against the cage.

Johnson escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Johnson drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Johnson decides to stand back up. Johnson steps back and let's Shields get back to his feet.
Shields on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot.
Shields takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.

Nice sprawl there from Shields as Johnson shoots in.

Johnson gets a takedown into half guard.
Still in half guard, Johnson seems content to control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Shields is refusing to be controlled, as Johnson sits in half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Lee Johnson dominated that second round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!



Johnson has Shields up against the cage in a clinch.
Shields has Johnson pressed against the cage, preventing Johnson from circling away and getting back to striking at range.
Johnson has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Come on Johnson - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.

Johnson is looking to break free of the clinch but Shields has double underhooks.

Shields has his takedown stuffed
and Johnson counters with a nice body shot.

Johnson clinches up with Shields and pushes him back against the cage.

Johnson breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Shields takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Johnson feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Johnson might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Shields looking for a guillotine here but Johnson defends easily.

Johnson tries to free his leg and advance position but Shields is retaining full guard.

Johnson knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Shields on the ground.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Lee Johnson.
A punch lands to the side of Shields 's head but he takes it in his stride.

Johnson clinches up with Shields and pushes him back against the cage.
Johnson is trying to push Shields away but Shields has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

Johnson's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Johnson shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Shields's guard.
Johnson wants to stand but Shields has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Johnson trying to control the position from guard on top but Shields is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Lee Johnson wasn't doing enough on the ground.
Johnson bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut.

Shields gets tackled into the cage by Johnson. Johnson maintains the clinch.

Johnson pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Johnson scores to the head and body with a nice combination!

Shields tries to keep at a distance but Johnson has taken the fight into the clinch.

Johnson escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Johnson gets the takedown into side control.
Shields is looking for a sweep.
Johnson wants to stand but Shields is controlling his arm.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Johnson decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Johnson lands a right hook to the body.
Johnson scores with a punch to the head.

Johnson has closed the distance and engaged Shields in a clinch.

Johnson breaks the clinch.

Johnson has closed the distance and engaged Shields in a clinch.
Johnson is trying to break the clinch but Shields is controlling him.

Johnson manages to break the clinch.
Johnson pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Shields back to the cage. Johnson follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.
Johnson scores with a jab.
Johnson throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Shields takes a kick to the body and keeps moving.

And that's the end of the fight!
Lee Johnson showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Johnson has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
