Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Nick Diaz! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Mauro Castello! The judges for this bout are Mauricio Rocha, Edson Gomes and Leandro Rodrigues.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Castello shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Castello is keen to just control but Diaz is a slippery customer. Castello stands up from half guard. Diaz misses with a series of wild punches.
Diaz fails with an attempt to clinch.
Diaz closes the distance and lands a one-two. Diaz throws a wild combination but nothing lands. Diaz moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Diaz fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Nick Diaz seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
That's one minute gone in the round. Diaz drives through with a takedown into Castello's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position. Castello is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control. Castello manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Diaz knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Castello on the ground. Castello thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!
Castello can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Diaz is looking to escape. Diaz is wriggling around trying to escape.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Castello looking to ground and pound but Diaz is blocking nicely. Diaz tries to reverse the position but Castello maintains control. Diaz tries to improve his position but instead Castello has taken his back! Diaz tries to escape the position.
Castello working from the back looking to end the fight with a rear naked choke. Diaz is doing well to defend. Castello seems to have got his hand under the chin though and he's sunk the choke in! Diaz is forced to tap and this one is over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:05 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Mauro Castello!
