Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Nick Vass Jr! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Renzo Rua! The judges for this bout are Jorge Garcia, Columbo Gatti and Steve Montenegro.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Rua shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard. If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup. Vass Jr trying to control here.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Rua throwing shots but Vass Jr is blocking nicely. Rua is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Vass Jr is just riding it out for now. Rua eventually gives up the hold. Vass Jr is not content to let Rua control the position. Vass Jr is trying to control but can't.
Vass Jr is staying active underneath Rua, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Rua sitting and controlling from the half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Vass Jr wants to improve his position but Rua is controlling well.
Rua wants to pass the guard but Vass Jr is defending well.
OK we're going to have a standup here. Renzo Rua hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart. Vass Jr wants to clinch. Rua closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Vass Jr's guard. Rua wants to stand up, so he's looking to wriggle free of Vass Jr's closed guard. He's half up but Vass Jr has locked on to an arm! Uh oh! Vass Jr pivots and extends the arm, Rua falls face first to the mat and taps??... does he?? YES! He's tapping! Excellent counter grappling there by Vass Jr! Well done that man!
