Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Phil Gilbert! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Grant Horwick! The judges for this bout are Steve Smith, Trevor Gratis and Ian Loll.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Horwick on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.
Horwick takes a body punch but keeps moving. Gilbert lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head. Horwick fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. Gilbert blocks a jab. Horwick closes the distance and clinches up with Gilbert, looking for a takedown. Horwick pushes Gilbert against the ropes but Gilbert circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. A combination from Gilbert does no damage. Horwick checks a leg kick. Horwick feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. Horwick decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Gilbert, up you get! Gilbert slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range. Horwick shoots in for a takedown and gets it. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Horwick trying to control from half guard but Gilbert is working away.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gilbert looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Horwick seems to be working for a kimura but Gilbert defends the submission attempt. Horwick content to sit in half guard and control for a moment. Horwick wants to pass the guard but Gilbert is defending well.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Horwick seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Gilbert does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Horwick goes for a cartwheel guard pass here but Gilbert does a handstand and catches Horwick in mid air with a triangle! Could it be? It is! It's the triple decker pecker wrecker! The fighters land on the ground with Gilbert on top - Horwick is already out from the submission! Gilbert gives Horwick's pecker the obligatory post submission twist and this one is aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaall over! Are you kidding me! That is world class Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. That guy is my hero!
