PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Mauri Pekkarinen (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Buff Bagwell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pekkarinen comes to the cage accompanied by Rydin. Bagwell is bobbing his head along to his entrance song: Eminem - Not Afraid. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 14 - 10 - 0, fighting out of New York, Mauri Pekkarinen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 18 - 14 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Buff Bagwell!
The judges for this bout are Yves DeLean, Robert Douchet and Trevor Gratis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Pekkarinen drives through and clinches with Bagwell against the cage.

Bagwell breaks from the clinch.
Pekkarinen stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Bagwell.

Bagwell shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Bagwell seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Pekkarinen does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Bagwell throwing shots but Pekkarinen is blocking nicely.
Bagwell wants to control but Pekkarinen is keeping him busy.
Bagwell trying to control from Pekkarinen's half guard. Pekkarinen has other ideas though and has regained full guard.
Bagwell in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Bagwell stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Pekkarinen swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Bagwell is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.

Bagwell postures up in Pekkarinen's guard and throws a big left but Pekkarinen blocks it.
Bagwell controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Bagwell stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Pekkarinen swivels though and keeps the full guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Bagwell's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Bagwell working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Bagwell shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Pekkarinen as he avoids it easily.
Pekkarinen gets cracked there but stands up to it.
Pekkarinen walks into a straight right hand from Bagwell.
Bagwell chopping away at his opponent's legs.
Bagwell fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Pekkarinen manages to avoid it.
Bagwell scores with a hook to the body. Pekkarinen takes a step back and tries to catch his breath.
Bagwell lands a jab to Pekkarinen's midsection.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Bagwell tries to score a power double leg takedown but Pekkarinen sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Bagwell somewhat.
Bagwell throws a leg kick that misses.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Bagwell defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Pekkarinen.
Pekkarinen throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Bagwell misses with a body shot.

Bagwell fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Pekkarinen sprawls well initially but Bagwell persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Bagwell not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Bagwell lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Bagwell prevents Pekkarinen from improving his position.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Pekkarinen on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Bagwell seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Pekkarinen knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Bagwell on the ground.
Bagwell keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.

Bagwell has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Pekkarinen defend it? Bagwell steps over the head and cranks it - Pekkarinen is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Bagwell!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:29 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Buff Bagwell!
