Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
12 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Pauli Painija! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Guilherme Alves! The judges for this bout are John Mangel, Skip Squint and Hugh Johnson.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Painija buckles his opponent's knee momentarily with a nice leg kick.
A lazy left from Painija finds it's target. Alves doesn't succeed with the takedown and Painija counters with a quick right hand to the jaw. Alves misses with a few strikes there.
Alves keeps the fight on the outside. Painija defending well as Alves loads up on a big left hand. Painija waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Alves. A punch combination from Painija misses. Alves moves out of range of the body kick from Painija.
Alves throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Painija counters with a nice body shot. Painija swings for the body but Alves moves out of range.
Painija fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Alves to the ground. Painija is now in Alves's guard. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
That's one minute gone in the round. The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Painija accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Painija showing good wrestling skills to control the position. Painija is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control. Painija postures up in Alves's guard and throws a big left but Alves blocks it. Alves had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Painija defends it easily. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Alves not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Painija trying to control the position from guard on top but Alves is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Painija controlling from the top position. Painija seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Alves for as long as he can get away with.
The ref stands the fighters back up. Pauli Painija wasn't doing enough on the ground. Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Painija.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Alves's corner calls for a 1-2. Alves obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range. Painija misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Alves tries to close the distance and clinch but Painija swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Painija throws a looping overhand right but Alves ducks down to avoid it. Alves misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Painija.

and Alves decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Painija's guard. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Painija has his feet on Alves's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work. Nice straight punches there by Painija. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Painija.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Painija scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. Alves regains half guard. Alves wants to control but Painija is keeping busy.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Painija throwing strikes from guard but Alves blocks nicely. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Painija wants to clinch. Alves tries to clinch but Painija moves out of range. Painija looking to land some kicks to the body here.
Pauli Painija seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Painija gets the takedown into side control. Painija wants to lay and pray for a moment but Alves keeps working. You can see the frustration on Alves's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Painija decides to stand back up.

A shot to the liver by Painija. Beautiful body shot. Painija throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Painija shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Alves wants to get back to full guard but Painija has passed into side control. Alves is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Painija working over Alves with some ground and pound. Alves looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable. Painija throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Alves wants to get back to full guard. Painija wants to pass to mount but Alves is defending the position. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Ground and pound from Painija. Alves works his way to full guard. Good work. Painija pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Alves is keeping the position for now. Alves looking for a sweep. Not yet Alves, not yet.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Alves has momentary wrist control but Painija slips an elbow through the middle. Alves has his hands on Painija's head, controlling the position. Painija trying to control the position from guard on top but Alves is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Alves escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Painija gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Painija slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard. Painija trying to control but Alves is working from the bottom.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Painija is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
We're going to have a standup here because Pauli Painija wasn't active enough for the referee's liking. Painija jabs away that one connects to the head of his opponent.
Alves lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Painija circles away quickly and effectively. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Alves moves in looking to clinch but Painija pushes him off. Painija lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Pauli Painija dominated that second round. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Painija ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Alves moves away. Painija gets a clinch. Alves takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. Painija landing knees to the body. They look like they could hurt.

That's one minute gone in the round. Alves throws a punch but it's blocked by Painija. Painija lands a nice elbow from the clinch. Painija manages to break the clinch.
Painija throws a shot from downtown. Alves moves away and avoids it. Alves moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross. Painija scores with a nice head shot.
Alves is rocked! Painija fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done. Alves is still on wobbly legs! Can Painija finish him? Painija shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Alves being controlled here, momentarily. Painija gets to his feet and stands over Alves, holding his ankles. He dives in with a big left hand that connects! Alves felt that one! Painija unloads more punches and elbows and this one is over! The ref has dived in to save Alves from any more punishment!
