PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Mat Matmat (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Cary Thompson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Matmat comes to the cage accompanied by pass tha axe. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 14 - 6 - 0, fighting out of New York, Mat Matmat!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 7 - 0, fighting out of New York, Cary Thompson!
The judges for this bout are Joseph Jones, Eddie Farnsworth and Jonathan Paton.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Thompson closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Thompson drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Matmat gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Matmat keeps control of Thompson as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.
Matmat makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut.
Thompson is trying to push Matmat away but Matmat has him pressed against the cage, so he's going nowhere.

Thompson pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
The fight stays on the outside here - Thompson looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Thompson is looking to clinch.
Thompson lands with a kick to the temple. Matmat shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"
Thompson tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Thompson throws a low kick, looking for Matmat's leg but Matmat calmly moves out of range.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Matmat misses with a kick to the body.
A head kick misses from Thompson.
Thompson walks into a jab.
Thompson throws a head kick that half lands.
Thompson fails in his attempt to clinch.
Matmat shoots in looking for a takedown. Thompson tries to sprawl out of it but Matmat keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Thompson manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Thompson throws a leg kick which misses Matmat's front leg but catches the back leg as Matmat tries to avoid it.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Thompson tries to clinch up but Matmat circles away and keeps his distance.

Thompson closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Matmat quickly recovers to half guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Thompson prevents Matmat from improving his position.
Thompson tries to pass the half guard into mount. Matmat knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Matmat wants to control but Thompson is keeping busy.
Thompson not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Matmat is looking for a sweep. Thompson is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Matmat is staying active underneath Thompson, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Thompson trying to pass the guard but Matmat defending well.
Thompson thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

Matmat keeping hold of Thompson's head, controlling as best he can.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Matmat looking for submissions from an awkward position here.
Thompson is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Thompson trying to control from half guard but Matmat is working away.
Thompson is looking to stand up but he'll have to free his leg first. Instead, Matmat manages to get to full guard.
Matmat tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Thompson stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Matmat swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Matmat lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Thompson!

Thompson tries to hold on but Matmat postures up.
Matmat looking to control but Thompson is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Thompson wants to hold on but Matmat pushes him away.
Thompson really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Thompson is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Matmat dominating with strikes here.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Cary Thompson dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Matmat throws a looping overhand right but Thompson ducks down to avoid it.
Matmat slips a jab and a cross from Thompson.
Thompson throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Matmat moves out of range as Thompson throws a body kick.
Thompson shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Matmat pinned against the cage. Matmat gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Thompson keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
A thudding body kick lands there by Thompson!

That's one minute gone in the round.
Matmat stuns Thompson with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.
Thompson tries to clinch there but Matmat circles away.
Cary Thompson is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Thompson throws a front kick aimed at Matmat's knee but Matmat avoids it well.
Thompson misses with a head kick.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Thompson.
Matmat shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Thompson as he avoids it easily.
Thompson tries to close the distance and clinch but Matmat swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.

Matmat takes a shot right to the bread basket.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Thompson misses with a head kick.
Matmat swats away the attempt to clinch by Thompson.
Thompson scores to the head and body with a nice combination!

Matmat takes a head kick and shrugs it off.
Thompson fakes the leg kick and cracks Matmat in the body.
Thompson fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Matmat manages to avoid it.
Thompson throws a series of punches but Matmat avoids them all with ease.
Cary Thompson seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Thompson pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
Nice sprawl there from Thompson as Matmat shoots in.
Thompson looks to clinch
and Matmat counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Thompson thinking.

Matmat cracks Thompson with a right hand to the side of the head.
Cary Thompson seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Thompson thuds a mid kick into his opponent's body. That will wear on Matmat if he has to take too many more of those.
Thompson throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Thompson tries to close the distance and clinch up but Matmat swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Thompson is on the wrong end of a nice combination from Matmat.
Thompson misses with a takedown attempt - Matmat sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Thompson dives in and grabs Matmat's left leg, looking for a takedown. Matmat pushes down on Thompson's head and hops out.
Mat Matmat has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Cary Thompson.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Thompson moves to clinch but Matmat breaks away
and Matmat makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Cary Thompson will probably get the nod - 10:9.

Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Thompson.

Matmat tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Thompson wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.

Thompson lands an elbow.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Thompson tries to move into full mount but can't pass Matmat's legs.
Matmat avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Thompson.
Matmat is trying to get back to half guard.
Thompson scoring with punches from side control.

Matmat is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Thompson off and has taken his back!
Matmat tries to keep control of the position but Thompson is staying busy.
Matmat throwing damaging strikes from the back! Thompson could be in trouble here!
Matmat looking to hold on to the position here but Thompson rolls and ends up regaining guard.
Matmat stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Thompson swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Matmat drops back looking for a leg! Thompson is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Thompson manages to kick Matmat off! Matmat jumps back into Thompson's guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Thompson looking to hit a scissor sweep but Matmat is one step ahead there.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Matmat is fighting to break Thompson's control of his arms but Thompson is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
Thompson tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Matmat postures up in Thompson's guard and throws a big left but Thompson blocks it.
Thompson keeping moving, preventing Matmat from controlling successfully.
Thompson preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
Thompson pulls Matmat in to control the position.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Matmat is working Thompson over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Matmat throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Thompson works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Thompson is trying to control the position but Matmat postures up.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Mat Matmat.
Well Thompson has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
