PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Paul Phoenix (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tommy Gunn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Phoenix comes to the cage accompanied by Phoenix. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Paul Phoenix!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Tommy Gunn!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Robert Twigg and George Francis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Phoenix is trying hard to land a takedown here. Gunn sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Phoenix dives in and grabs Gunn's left leg, looking for a takedown. Gunn pushes down on Phoenix's head and hops out.
Phoenix tries to clinch there but Gunn circles away.
Phoenix tries to clinch but Gunn is having none of it.
The fighters circle momentarily. Phoenix darts into range and connects with a nice straight punch.
Gunn misses with a straight left.

Phoenix fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Gunn, pushing him back against the cage.
Phoenix stalling.
Phoenix is working for takedown but Gunn is calmly controlling the position for now.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Paul Phoenix. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Phoenix tries to circle away but Gunn has him pinned against the cage.
Phoenix is trying to break free.
Phoenix is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though.

Phoenix breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Gunn misses with a two punch combination.
Phoenix is trying hard to land a takedown here. Gunn sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Gunn is defended easily by Phoenix.

It looks like Paul Phoenix has been cut.
Phoenix wants to clinch up but Gunn keeps it at a distance.
Gunn closes the distance and clinches up with Phoenix, looking for a takedown. Gunn pushes Phoenix against the cage but Phoenix circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

Phoenix shoots and misses

and Gunn counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Phoenix!
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

Gunn wants to finish this one by submission but Phoenix is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Gunn.
Phoenix is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Gunn controlling from the full mount.
Gunn can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Phoenix is looking to escape.

Phoenix is looking to get to half guard.
Gunn is looking to work his way around to Phoenix's back. He needs to be careful though, as he's in danger of losing this dominant position.

Gunn goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Phoenix turns into him and now he's in Gunn's guard.
Gunn is trying to keep Phoenix in close.
Phoenix trying to control the position from guard on top but Gunn is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Phoenix wants to pass the guard but Gunn is keeping the position.

Paul Phoenix has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Phoenix throws a lazy head kick

and Gunn counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Phoenix keeping moving, preventing Gunn from controlling successfully.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Phoenix trying to keep a closed guard but Gunn is proving a slippery customer.

Gunn slips nicely into half guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Phoenix is trying to get back to full guard.
Gunn is trying to control the action in half guard but Phoenix is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Gunn is pressing down on Phoenix's thigh, looking to free his foot. Phoenix is holding on for now.

Phoenix is defending against the submission attempts here by Gunn.

Gunn seems to be working for a kimura but Phoenix defends the submission attempt.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Phoenix wants to control but Gunn is keeping busy and won't allow it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Gunn fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.
Phoenix fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Phoenix shoots in but no luck this time.
Phoenix tries to close the distance and clinch but Gunn swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Gunn has his takedown stuffed

and Phoenix counters by moving into the clinch.
Gunn tries to score a body lock takedown but Phoenix shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Paul Phoenix has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Tommy Gunn.

Phoenix goes for a takedown in the clinch but Gunn prevents it.

Phoenix tries to clinch but Gunn is having none of it.

Sloppy strikes from Gunn. Those never looked like landing.
Phoenix shoots in but no luck this time.

Phoenix shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Gunn sprawls well. Gunn wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Phoenix gets slowly back to his feet.

Phoenix shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Gunn pinned against the cage. Gunn gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Phoenix is trying to control Gunn's posture but Gunn avoids it.
Gunn wants to lay and pray for a moment but Phoenix keeps working.

Gunn is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Phoenix knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

You can see the frustration on Phoenix's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.

Gunn thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Phoenix on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Phoenix tries to get out of the position.

Phoenix misses with a strike from the bottom.
Phoenix is looking for a sweep.
Phoenix can't do much from the bottom here.

Gunn tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Gunn has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Tommy Gunn showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!


Phoenix looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Phoenix leaves Gunn with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Paul Phoenix is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Gunn lands a lovely overhand right.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Phoenix.
Phoenix remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while.

Gunn is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Phoenix off and has taken his back!
Phoenix looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment.

Gunn has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Phoenix has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!
Tommy Gunn has got the better of the ground game so far.
Phoenix turns into Gunn and is now in his guard.

Gunn has his foot on Phoenix's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Phoenix works his way back into a safe position though.

Gunn escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Phoenix gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Phoenix wants to stand but Gunn has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Gunn is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Phoenix trying to control but Gunn is working from the bottom.

Phoenix not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Gunn looking to control.

Gunn looking for a guillotine here but Phoenix defends easily.

Phoenix got a little sloppy there for a moment and Gunn has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Phoenix has managed to get both his arms back between Gunn's legs - danger averted.
Gunn takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Phoenix would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Gunn looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Gunn can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Phoenix controls the pace.
Phoenix wants to control from the top but Gunn keeps moving.
Phoenix with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Gunn is trying to keep Phoenix in close.

Gunn has momentary wrist control but Phoenix slips an elbow through the middle.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Paul Phoenix.
I think Gunn has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
