Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
18 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, James Tony! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
12 - 11 - 1, fighting out of Hilo, Rocky Blyer! The judges for this bout are , and .
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Blyer misses with a two punch combination.
Blyer looks to throw the jab but Tony is out of range. Tony tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Blyer throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Tony cracks Blyer with an open hand slap. Tony comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range. Tony shoots for a double leg takedown but Blyer sprawls well. He's pushed Tony's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. Blyer looks to land a combination but Tony avoids it well. Tony moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross. No joy there for Blyer, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Blyer throws a right and a left that Tony avoids nicely. Blyer bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes. Tony swings for the body but Blyer moves out of range.
Tony swings wildly with a hook that is half blocked by Blyer. Tony ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Blyer misses with a series of wild punches.
No joy there for Blyer, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Blyer feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Tonys jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist! Blyer throws a body punch but Tony moves out of range.
That's one minute gone in the round. A jab from Blyer misses. A nice combination there by Blyer.
Tony drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Blyer taking a bit of punishment here - Tony scoring with strikes. Tony wants to lay and pray for a moment but Blyer keeps working. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Blyer is trying to escape and get back to his feet. Blyer is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first. Tony tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. Blyer dodges the ground and pound from Tony.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Tony scores with punches from side control. Blyer pushes Tony away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Tony gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control. Tony trying to control the position but Blyer is working away. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Tony looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything. Blyer wants to get back to his feet but Tony drags him back down. Blyer really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Tony. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Tony trying to control the position but Blyer is working away. Blyer gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there! Blyer's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up. Tony throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Blyer is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position. Tony scoring with some good ground and pound from mount here. Will he manage to finish Blyer?
Tony jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Blyer is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Blyer and Tony has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Tony tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it. Blyer is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Tony has just dragged him back down to the mat. Blyer prevents Tony from moving into mount. Tony creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Blyer sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike. Tony has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Blyer wants to get back to his feet but Tony drags him back down. Blyer is being controlled here. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
James Tony dominated that round. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.
Blyer digs a good hook to Tony's body.
Tony lands a nice hook to Blyer's body. Blyer takes it in his stride and looks to land his own strikes. Blyer scores with a decent looking hook. A jab from Blyer misses. Blyer uses good head movement to avoid the hook from Tony. Blyer connects with a right hand. Tony shakes it off. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Tony tries to clinch up and Blyer counters with a nice uppercut. Rocky Blyer seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Blyer lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Tony circles away quickly and effectively. Tony takes one to the chin there. Blyer swings away with a body shot that misses
and Tony counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body. Tony pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Blyer waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Tony. Blyer throws a body punch but Tony moves out of range. Rocky Blyer seems to be getting the better of the standup. Blyer connects with a good straight punch right through the guard and follows up with a right hook and a left hook! That last one sent Tony tumbling to the canvas! Blyer pours on the pressure with more strikes and the referee has no hesitation diving in to stop the fight! Tony was done - good stoppage!
