PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Wanderlei Souza (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Peter Depta (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Souza comes to the cage accompanied by The Hart Song. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Peter Depta!
The judges for this bout are Konstantin Menshow, Dmitry Maklakov and Igor Prikhodko.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Souza showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Depta.
Depta stuffs the takedown.
Depta lands a really nice looking cross but Souza seems unphased.
Depta keeps the fight on the outside.
Depta is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Souza slips a jab and a cross from Depta.
A lazy left from Depta finds it's target.


It looks like Wanderlei Souza has been cut.
Souza wants to clinch but Depta slips to the side
and Depta counters nicely by changing levels and landing a hook to the body.
Souza tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Depta paws at him with a jab and circles away.

Depta closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
Depta is trying to wear down his opponent with knees to the body.
Depta is trying to break the clinch but Souza has him pressed against the cage.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Souza wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Depta has him pressed against the cage.
Souza wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.

Souza breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Souza gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Depta to score an easy takedown into full guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Souza tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Souza keeping busy, throwing shots from the bottom.
Depta is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Depta wants to stand but Souza has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Depta trying to control but Souza is working from the bottom.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Peter Depta wasn't active enough on the ground.
Depta connects with a body shot that sends Souza's belly button to the back.
Souza shoots in but Depta avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Souza is breathing heavily.

Depta forces Souza back against the cage and clinches.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Souza jumps guard but Depta stands there with Souza around his waist. Souza gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Souza tries to land knees in the clinch but Depta avoids the damage to the body.

Depta's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Souza wants to clinch up but Depta keeps it at a distance.
Depta defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Souza.
Souza throws a push kick but Depta slaps the foot to one side.
Depta stuffs the takedown.

Depta clinches up against the cage.

Depta breaks from the clinch.
Souza wants to clinch.
A head kick misses from Depta.

Depta closes the distance and pushes Souza back into the cage.

Depta scores with a nice hook to the head.

Depta wants the takedown. Souza is fighting it off but Depta persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Souza's guard against the cage.

Depta stands up from guard. Let's bang!

Depta drives through and clinches with Souza against the cage.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Souza is trying to stall.

Depta pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Depta moves into range and clinches up with Souza.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Depta makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut.
A left hand lands to the body for Depta.
Depta is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Peter Depta dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Wanderlei Souza's cut.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Souza takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.

Depta rushes Souza and presses him up against the cage.
Souza is trying to force a seperation but Depta has the dominant position.
Depta digs a right hand into Souza's ribs. Those have got to be taking their toll on Souza's gas tank.

Depta manages to break the clinch.
Depta fails with a takedown attempt.
Depta looks for a takedown but Souza sprawls well.
Souza stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Souza wants it to stay on the feet.
Wanderlei Souza has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Peter Depta.
Depta looks to land a combination. Souza sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
Depta stuffs the takedown.
No joy there for Depta, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Depta throws a series of punches but Souza avoids them all with ease.
Souza shoots in for a takedown but Depta shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Peter Depta seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Souza tries to clinch there but Depta circles away.
Wanderlei Souza is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Souza tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Depta smiles and moves away.

Depta postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Depta decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Souza, up you get!
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Depta rushes Souza and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
A short uppercut from Depta.

Depta escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Depta gets a takedown into half guard.

Depta is working for a submission of some sort.
Depta works his way into side control.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Depta decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Depta fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Souza on the side of the head.
Some wild striking there from Depta.
Souza throws a shot from downtown. Depta moves away and avoids it.
Depta tries to clinch up but Souza circles away and keeps his distance.
Depta stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Depta connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Souza's hands.

Depta rushes Souza and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Souza is trying to drag Depta to the mat but Depta just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.

Depta breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Souza takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Depta lands with a nice body punch.
Depta scores with a body shot.
Souza dodges the punch combination from Depta.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Peter Depta showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The cut man is working on Wanderlei Souza's cut.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! And we move into the final round!


A telegraphed takedown attempt from Souza is defended easily by Depta.
Depta looks to land a combination. Souza sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
Depta tries to clinch but Souza is having none of it.
Depta misses with a takedown attempt - Souza sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Depta lands a jab-cross combination.
Depta fails with an attempt to clinch.
Left hook, right uppercut from Depta.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Depta cracks a nice hook into Souza's ribs.
Souza shoots in looking for a takedown but Depta manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Souza's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.

Depta misses with the combination.
Depta goes to the watering hole and comes back with a big thumbs up from the judges as he scores a three punch combo.

Depta fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Souza, pushing him back against the cage.
Souza is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.

Depta escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Souza tries to keep at a distance but Depta has taken the fight into the clinch.

A short left from Depta.
Both guys are working to get underhooks.
Depta scores with a hook to the body.
Souza fails to pull guard.

Depta manages to break the clinch.

Depta moves into the clinch successfully.
Souza tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Depta smiles and moves away.
Depta throws a right hand that Souza ducks under and follows up with a left that Souza also avoids with ease.

Depta closes the distance and clinches.
Souza takes a shot to the head.
Souza jumps guard but Depta stands there with Souza around his waist. Souza gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Depta pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Sloppy strikes from Depta. Those never looked like landing.
Some wild striking there from Depta.

Depta closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Depta lands in his opponent's guard.
Souza wants to stand up but Depta is controlling him.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Depta stands up from Souza's guard - Depta perhaps looking for a knockout.
Peter Depta is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Depta clinches.
Souza misses with a body punch.

Depta jumps into guard, dragging Souza to the mat.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Depta managing to control the position.
Wanderlei Souza has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Let's hope that Depta has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Peter Depta comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Depta has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
