PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Antonio Vegata (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Freddy Alves (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Alves is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Trik Turner - Friends and Family. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Antonio Vegata!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Freddy Alves!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Cesar, Matheus Silva and Paulo Santos.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Alves throws a predictable looking body shot
and Alves takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Alves is looking to slow Vegata down with leg kicks.
Vegata ducks under a wild hook from Alves.
Vegata moves away from the strike by Alves.

Alves looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Vegata is fending him off so far but Alves persists. Nope, Vegata circles away and we're back to standing.
Alves tries to clinch but Vegata moves out of range.
Vegata rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Alves moves out of range and avoids them all easily.

and Alves cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

Alves is looking to clinch but Vegata is avoiding it.

Vegata fails with a takedown attempt.

Alves moves into the clinch.
Vegata prevents a body shot from Alves.
Alves goes for a takedown attempt but Vegata pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

Vegata throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Alves's waist but Alves gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Vegata off to one side.

Alves just misses with a punch to the body.
The fighters circling - Vegata throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Alves throws a nice looking combination but Vegata bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Alves tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Vegata paws at him with a jab and circles away.
A lazy left from Vegata finds it's target.

Alves pushing out the jab but it's not landing.
Alves swings for the body but Vegata moves out of range.
No luck for Alves with that takedown attempt.
Antonio Vegata has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Freddy Alves.

Vegata fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Alves to the ground. Vegata is now in Alves's guard.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Vegata wants to control from the top but Alves keeps moving.
Vegata tries to free his leg and advance position but Alves is retaining full guard.

Alves has his foot on Vegata's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Vegata works his way back into a safe position though.

Alves can't keep his opponent in guard - Vegata advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Vegata is working for a kimura but Alves is defending it quite comfortably.
Vegata is looking to advance position but Alves won't allow it.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Vegata is looking for a kimura but Alves is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Vegata to get the leverage.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Alves has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Vegata is working away from the top position though.

Vegata is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Alves sees it coming and defends easily.

That was a close round but I would say that Antonio Vegata will probably get the nod.
That's time! Vegata's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.


Alves tries to bum rush Vegata with a series of wild strikes but Vegata uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Alves throws a chopping leg kick but Vegata manages to avoid taking any serious damage.
Vegata misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

Alves bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Vegata has one of Alves's arms on lockdown, trying to prevent him from doing any damage.
Vegata parries the strikes from Alves easily there. Alves is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Vegata to escape.

Vegata manages to get back to half guard.

Alves is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Vegata manages to get to full guard.
Alves showing good wrestling skills to control the position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Alves throwing strikes but missing.
Alves is looking to work some ground and pound but Vegata has wrist control.
Alves stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Vegata swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Antonio Vegata overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Alves with a flurry of punches that miss.
Alves tries to free his leg and advance position but Vegata is retaining full guard.

Alves must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Alves tries to stand but Vegata is controlling from the bottom.
Alvesis looking to pass into half guard but Vegata pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Vegata is in guard.
Alves keeping moving, preventing Vegata from controlling successfully.
Vegata looking to sit in guard and control but Alves gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Alves throws and elbow that misses. Vegata uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Alves's guard. Nice move by Vegata!

Vegata is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Alves really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Vegata. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Vegata wants to control from the top but Alves keeps moving.
Alves is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Freddy Alves showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

Vegata lands a really nice looking cross but Alves seems unphased.

Alves is really struggling to land any decent head shots against his taller opponent.
Vegata throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Alves's waist but Alves gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Vegata off to one side.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Antonio Vegata. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Alves tried to score with a low kick but Vegata checks it.
Alves shoots in for a takedown but Vegata shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

Vegata shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Alves pinned against the cage. Alves gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Alves uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Vegata.

Alves will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
A nice combination there by Vegata.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Vegata stops Alves from getting back to his feet.
Alves takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Vegata is trying to control. Alves wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Alves tries to roll over but Vegata keeps him under control.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Vegata has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Alves defend it? Vegata steps over the head and cranks it - Alves is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Vegata!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:18 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Antonio Vegata!
