The bell rings for round one and we are underway! The crowd cheers as Fitzwell lands an impressive looking overhand right. Downey doesn't seem phased though. Dick Fitzwell seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Downey will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. Fitzwell lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Downey circles away quickly and effectively. Downey feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position. Downey won't allow Fitzwell to get back to his feet. Downey trying to control the position from guard on top but Fitzwell is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Let's see if Fitzwell can do anything to dispel that myth.
That's one minute gone in the round. Downey is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Fitzwell really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Downey. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Downey trying to control the position from guard on top but Fitzwell is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Fitzwell is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far. Downey stands and throws Fitzwell's legs to the side, diving into side control. Downey wants to control but Fitzwell is keeping him busy.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Downey tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Downey has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! Fitzwell is trying to get back to his feet. Downey has hold of Fitzwell's arm here. He's working for an Americana. It looks like he might have it! Fitzwell tries to escape but he's just digging himself in deeper - Downey cranks the arm and Fitzwell screams in pain! The ref makes a decision and ends the fight before the tap - no complains from Fitzwell, who is just happy to have his arm attached to his body.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:50 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Americana). Cliff Downey!
