Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Frank Mir! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Kenny Powers! The judges for this bout are Gwen Towbar, Wesley Smith and Frank Dennis.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Powers misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Mir shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. Powers has his foot on Mir's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Mir works his way back into a safe position though. Powers keeping moving, preventing Mir from controlling successfully. Powers should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete. Powers is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Mir works a leg free and moves into half guard. Powers gets back to full guard.
Mir seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. Mir trying to control but Powers is working from the bottom. Powers working away from the bottom but not quite defensive enough there because Mir has passed into half guard!
That's one minute gone in the round. Mir passes to side control. Powers tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Mir wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Powers takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
Powers tries to contro but end up mounted... ooooh, that's bad. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Mir controlling the position easily from mount. Mir unloading with bombs! Mir manages to capitalize on a mistake by Powers to take his back! Powers staying busy and making it hard for Mir to control.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Mir looking for the RNC. Mir gets his hooks in and is throwing strikes. Mir keeps control of the position as Powers tries to break free.
Mir is looking cool and calm here, just waiting for a good opportunity to attack and finish the fight from this dominant position.

Powers is keeping busy.
Mir has the hooks in. Powers is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted. Powers is staying cool under pressure, defending well against the rear naked choke attempt from his opponent.
Mir has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Mir patiently working for the choke. Which fighter will keep their nerve here? Powers is defending well here and trying to improve his position.

Mir let's go of the attempt for now. Mir is breathing heavily. Mir gets his hands free as Powers looks to control. Mir is looking for the choke from the back position but Powers is controlling his hands well. Powers holding both Mir 's hands and preventing any damage. Powers is very frustrated here, being controlled quite effectively by Mir.
We're hearing some news coming in from back stage. It's official - Powers has eaten all the pies!

Mir is controlling his opponent, waiting for an opportunity to finish. Powers is in a world of trouble here. He's outmatched on the ground here and he'd better get Mir off his back sharpish unless he wants to be submitted. Will Mir go for the finish here or will he try and keep control of the position?
Powers turns into Mir and is now in his guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Mir is on top in guard.
Mir trying to control but Powers is working from the bottom. Mir stays in close to Powers's body and controls the position. Mir passes Powers's left leg - he's now in half guard. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Frank Mir dominated that round. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!
Mir shoots in for a takedown but Powers shows good takedown defense. Mir shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Oh and he's advanced to full mount straight away. Mir is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Powers has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Powers! Mir looking to hit a scissor sweep but Powers is one step ahead there. Powers pushes down on Mir's leg and manages to get into half guard. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Powers is looking for a kimura here.
Mir is trying to maintain the position but Powers is very close to passing his half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Powers trying to control from half guard but Mir is working away. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Powers is thwarting Mir's attempts to control the position. Powers prevents Mir from improving his position. Mir regains full guard. Nicely done. Mir is trying to keep Powers in close.
Mir bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Powers's guard. Mir looking to sit in guard and control but Powers gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Powers being controlled here momentarily.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Frank Mir just wasn't active enough from the dominant position. Mir looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard. Mir looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Powers is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Mir jumps into side control! Powers struggling a bit here. Powers is trying to get back to half guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Powers is not content to let Mir control the position. Powers throwing some weak shots from the bottom that do no damage.
Powers tries to buck Mir off but Mir is having none of it. Powers is trying to control Mir's posture but Mir avoids it.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Mir looking for a takedown here - he's got it. Mir with a flurry of punches that miss. Mir sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Powers's guard. Powers is looking to improve his position.
Mir moves nicely into side control.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Mir wants to lay and pray for a moment but Powers keeps working. Powers avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Mir. Mir trying to control the action but Powers is working from the bottom. Mir throwing shots but missing, from side control. Mir wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Powers, who protects the arm well. Mir has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Powers! Mir looking for a guillotine from mount but Powers is having none of it. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Frank Mir dominated that second round. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!
The fighters circling - Powers throws out the jab but it was never going to land. Powers throws a head kick but Mir moves out of range.
Mir throws a series of punches but Powers avoids them all with ease. Mir throws a nice looking combination but Powers bobs and weaves to avoid any damage. Mir's corner calls for a 1,2 combination and Mir duly obliges. Mir misses with a jab, cross combination.
Nice body punch from Powers. Powers misses with a head kick.
Donk. Powers catches Mir right on the button with a cross. Mir shoots in and bounces Powers off the cage to secure the takedown into guard. Powers working a defensive guard here.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
That's one minute gone in the round. Powers working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Mir. Powers can't keep his opponent in guard - Mir advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. Mir is stalling here. Powers is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Mir seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Powers has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work. Mir is looking for a sweep. Mir wants to control but Powers postures up. Mir tries to get back to half guard but can't. The strikes coming from Powers are missing the target in this wave of attacks. Mir manages to work his way to half guard, despite Powers's best efforts.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Powers is looking to take a break and control but Mir is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. The fighters are battling for position here. Mir manages to regain full guard. Nice work. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Mir is on top in guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Mir passes to side control. Powers on the wrong end of some ground and pound. Mir trying to control the action but Powers is working from the bottom. Mir goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Powers has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Mir but great work by Powers. Frank Mir overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Mir tries to improve position but can't. Powers working away. Mir tries to bench press Powers off him but Powers keeps the position. Kenny Powers has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
That's four minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Mir is trying to control Powers's posture but Powers avoids it. Mir regains half guard. Powers is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
The fighters are battling for position here. Mir manages to regain full guard. Nice work. Powers drops back looking for a leg! Mir is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Mir manages to kick Powers off! Powers jumps back into Mir's guard. Mir is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Mir is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
And that's the end of the fight! Frank Mir showed his dominance in that final round. Well Mir has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
